Module 4 ControlVolumeAnalysis
A tank of volume 10 cm3 contains methane at a constant temperature of 27 0C. The methane is
allowed to escape through a small hole of 10 -7 m2 area. If the mass flow rate of methane is
proportional to the pressure within the tank, i.e. mout = 0.16 ×10 -9 p kg/s where p is in Pa,
calculate the time required for the pressure in the tank to drop from 400 to 300 kPa. For methane
take R = 0.518 kJ/kgK at 270C.
Example: An aeroplane moves forward at a speed of 971 km/hr. The frontal intake area of jet
engine is 0.8 m2 and the entering air density is 0.736 kg/m3. A stationary observer determines that
relative to the earth, the jet engine exhaust gases move away from the engine with a speed of 1050
km/hr. The engine exhaust area is 0.558 m2 and the exhaust gas density is 0.515 kg/m3. Estimate
the mass flow rate of the fuel into the engine in kg/hr.
