Introduction To Computer
A Computer is a programmable machine.
Computers are truly amazing machine.
The two principal characteristics of a computer
are:
It responds to a specific set of instructions in a
well defined manner.
It can execute a preordered list of instructions
( a program).
Modern computers are electronic & digital. The
actual machinery wires, transistor, monitor,
keyboard, mouse & circuit is called hardware.
The instructions & data are called as software.
# Types of computer #
• Personal Computer
• Mainframe Computer
• Super Computer
• Workstation Computer
• Mini Computer
Personal Computer
A small, single user computer based
on a microprocessor. In addition to the
microprocessor, a personal computer
has a keyboard for entering data, a
monitor for displaying information, & a
storage device for saving data.
Mainframe Computer
A powerful multi-user computer capable of
supporting many hundreds users
simultaneously.
Super Computer
An extremely fast computer that can perform
hundreds of millions of instructions per
second.
Workstation
A powerful, single user computer. A
workstation is like a personal computer, but it
has a more powerful microprocessor and a
high quality monitor.
Minicomputer
A multi-user computer capable of supporting
ten to hundreds of user simultaneously.
Characteristics of Computer
All computers have certain common
characteristics irrespective of their type &
size. Computers are not just adding
machines, they are capable of doing
complex activities & operations. The main
characteristics of computer are as below:
Word Length
Speed
Storage
Accuracy
Versatility
Automation
Diligence
Word Length
A digital computer operates on binary digits
0 & 1. It can understand information only in
terms of 0s & 1s. A binary digit is called as
bit. A group of 8 bits is called as byte. The
number of bits that a computer can process
at a time in parallel is called its word length.
Commonly used word length are 8,16,32 &
64 bits. The longer the word length, the more
powerful the computer is.
Speed
Computers can calculate at very high
speeds. A microcomputer can execute
millions of instructions per second over &
over again without any mistake. As the
power of computer increases, the speed also
increases. For example, supercomputers
can operate at speeds measured in
nanoseconds & even picoseconds.
Storage
Computers have their main memory &
auxiliary memory systems. A computer can
store a large amount of data. With more &
more auxiliary storage devices, which are
capable of storing huge amount of data, the
storage capacity of a computer is virtually
unlimited. The factor that makes computer
storage unique is not that is not store vast
amount of data, but the fact that it can
retrieve the information that the user wants in
a few seconds.
Accuracy
The accuracy of a computer system is very
high. In most cases, the errors are due to the
human factor rather than the technological
flaws. For example, if a program is wrongly
coded, if the data is corrupted or if the
program logic is flawed, then irrespective on
which computer you run it, you will get wrong
results.
Versatility
Computers are very versatile machines.
They can perform activities ranging from
simple calculations to performing complex
CAD (Computer Aided Design) modeling &
simulation to navigating missiles & satellites.
Computers can communicate with other
computer & can receive send data in
various form text, sound, video, graphics etc.
Automation
Computer is not a simple calculator where
you have to punch in the numbers & press
‘equal to’ sign to get the result. Once the task
is initiated, computer can proceed on its own
till its completion. Computers can be
programmed to perform a series of complex
task involving multiple programs.
Diligence
Diligence means being constant & earnest
in effort & application. Being a machine, a
computer does not have weakness like
tiredness, lack of concentration etc.
Computers won’t get tired or bored. They will
not go into depression or loose
concentration. They will perform the task are
given to them, irrespective of whether it is
interesting, creative & boring.
