Interior Textiles

Prof.Dr.S.Kathirvelu
Prl/AIFD
Interior textiles are produced for either the
‘domestic’ (also referred to as ‘private’ or
‘residential’) or ‘contract’ (also referred to as
‘commercial’) markets. Domestic textiles are
those found in the home or private interiors.
Contract textiles are those found in public or
commercial interiors.

2
• Interior textiles are usually discussed in
relation to two key categories: ‘furnishing
fabrics’ and ‘household textiles’. Furnishing
fabrics include: upholstery fabrics, soft floor
coverings, wall coverings, window furnishing
(curtains, drapes, blinds) and accessories such
as cushions and throws.

3
• Household textiles include all textiles used in domestic interiors
apart from furnishing fabrics. For example: bedding, towels,
blankets, tablecloths and napkins.

• When designed for hospitality and care-type facilities, these

products are referred to as ‘institutional textiles’ as they are
required to conform to specific performance and safety criteria.

• Within these product areas there are differences in raw

materials, fabric structures, aesthetics and performance
requirements.

4
• Interior materials for trains, buses, ships and
aircraft—as means of public transportation—
are required to have not only excellent design
but also high functionality.
• In line with our development philosophy of
“KKR+A (Kenko [Health], Kankyo
[Environment], Recycle and Amenity),” the
Suminoe Textile Group has planned and
developed functional materials that are
friendly to people and the environment

5
• Chief among them are the train seat cushion
material SUMICUBE®, which produces no toxic
gas at the time of combustion, Eco-Fabric
using 50% or more recycled PET fiber, and the
Floor Signage Film Series which takes into
account ecology and safety. Through these
products, the Suminoe Textile Group
contributes to producing comfortable vehicle
interior spaces.

6
7
• We offer Eco-Fabric made of recycled
polyester yarn as seat covering material for
railway vehicles and buses.* Eco-Fabric: 50%
or more recycled fiber is used.

• signage film. This product is designed in consideration of safety
and friendliness to the environment. The film bears pictograms
to indicate priority spaces, and to call passengers’ attention to
prevent accidents at the doors of train cars and buses or within
the vehicles.

• [Environment-friendliness]This film produces little smoke and

generates very little toxic hydrogen chloride gas when
combusted.[Safety]This film is highly slip-resistant, and also
excels in resistance of abrasion.
10
11
• PH Film is easy-to-install signage film, which
features greater durability in addition to the
basic properties of OH Film. Specifically, PH Film
has enhanced resistance to breakage, peeling
off, abrasion and stains. Moreover, PH Film can
remain highly stain-resistant even after a long
period of use in an environment where many
people come and go.
12
• SUMICUBE® is seat cushion material for railway cars.
It is made from safe materials that do not generate
cyanide or other poisonous gases when combusted.
SUMICUBE® is widely used in commuter train cars of
JR, private railways and publicly run subways. It has
also found applications in limited express and
Shinkansen bullet train cars, in which greater
passenger comfort is required.

13
14

The Pneumatic Comfort System (PCS)

Air-filled cushions that totally replace foams are the key

components of the PCS. Pressure is distributed across multiple
chambers to maximize passenger comfort. Both in the sitting and
lie-flat positions, the PCS automatically adjusts itself. However,
passengers can always modify the firmness of the cushions to
their personal preferences and pamper themselves with the
integrated massage function.

Finishings

27

Antistain effect

• Spilling a beverage on the

seat cover fabric is no
longer a problem. The
antistain finish prevents
liquids from seeping into
the fabric: they can be
gently wiped away
without leaving any
traces.
28
Hygienic effect

• The hygienic effect of

the finish inhibits the
growth of bacteria and
fungi, thus preventing
the occurrence of
odors in the fabric.
Textiles remain fresh
for a longer period of
time.

30
Wool/Nylon
• Longevity, high underfoot comfort, and suppression of
static charging are assets of Lantal's pure wool carpets.
• The composition of polyamide carpets makes them
very wear-resistant and durable. Thanks to the new
generation of polyamide yarns, they repel dirt and are
easy to clean.

31
Wool / Polyamide

• Lantal’s latest-generation hybrid carpets have been optimized with

respect to weight and wear. They combine the best properties of
wool and polyamide. On the one hand, the wool fiber assures very
good looks and on the other, the polyamide fiber improves the
carpet’s resilience.

The new construction not only prevents linting and unwanted

brightening but also assures a longer service life in comparison with
conventional wool carpets. The principal advantages for our
customers are longer maintenance intervals and lower cost.
32
Film lamination for velvet seat cover fabrics

33
• The application of a film on the back of the
velvet fabric protects the seat upholstery and
the foam against moisture and wetness. In
the lamination process, the film is
permanently bonded with the back side of
the velvet.
• The velvet seat cover fabric is impermeable
to water: the film prevents the upholstery
and the foam from absorbing liquids.

38
Requirements

• floor coverings for the floor are sound-

absorbing and slip-resistant. Whether your
focus is on design or longevity, the carpets
should cover both aspects.

39
3D Visualization
• To assess the effect of a product selection, it has to be
presented in realistic surroundings. For this reason,
Simulation visualizes the fabric and carpet images modified in
simulations by using a 3D graphics program.

• It showcases the product selection in a three-dimensionally

constructed interior space. Quick Response System has the
ability to pre-visualize a new concept within merely 24 hours.

40
• Automotive facings in floor coverings are either tufted or

needle punched fabric produced from spun-dyed PA (tufted),

PET or PP fibres (needle punched) depending on the

durability, cost and required specifications, which vary

globally between vehicle manufacturers.

• Compared to tufted fabrics, needle punched fabrics have a

shorter pile and a different surface structure, which affects

the appearance and wear resistance of the floor covering,

particularly in relation to pile crushing/recovery and soiling.

41
• Cut-piles are more extensively used then loop pile.
Of the interior carpet, about 55% is composed of
nonwoven fabrics with tufted accounting for 45%.
• The gradual shift towards needle punched fabric is
being driven principally by a desire to reduce cost
but also reflects technical progress in achieving
improved aesthetic appearance, abrasion resistance,
pile stability and cleanability of needled fabrics.

42
3-D Knitting Of Car Seat Covers

• This highly advanced, computer-controlled knitting technique

enables several conventional cuts and sews panels to be
replaced with just a single 3-D shaped piece. Car seat covers
can be knitted in just one piece; the single item includes all
tubes, flaps and ties downs necessary for direct fitting.

• The labour intensive stages of panel cutting and sewing of up

to 17 individual pieces of fabric are reduced to just one or
two with no cutting waste.
43
• The 3-D technique allows considerable design
flexibility and creativity. Computer-assisted
design ‘paint box’ systems facilitate design
themes;
• visual appearance can be dramatically modified
by changes in fabric construction, yarn type,
and color. Logos can be accurately placed.

44
45

• Increase fuel economy

• Improve passenger comfort

• Craft ergonomic seat designs

• Create space savings

• Design flexibility
