Proving of Inequalities in A Triangle

This document discusses several theorems and properties related to proving inequalities in triangles: 1) It reviews the exterior angle inequality theorem, triangle inequality theorem, and hinge theorem. 2) It outlines basic properties of inequalities like addition, subtraction, multiplication, transitive, and substitution properties. 3) The lesson proper focuses on using the exterior angle inequality theorem to prove inequalities within a triangle, and theorems relating unequal sides to unequal opposite angles and vice versa.

PROVING OF

INEQUALITIES IN A
TRIANGLE
Review
■ Exterior Angle Inequality Theorem
– In any triangle, the measure of an exterior angle of a triangle is greater
than the measure of either of the two remote interior angles.
■ Triangle Inequality Theorem
– In any triangle, the sum of the lengths of any two of its sides is greater
than the length of its third side.
■ Hinge Theorem
– If two sides of one triangle are congruent to two sides of another
triangle, but the included angle of the first triangle is larger than the
included triangle of the second triangle, then the third side of the first
triangle is longer than the third side of the second triangle.

Basic Properties of Inequalities
■ Addition Property of Inequality
– If a < b, then a + c < b + c.
– If a < b and c < d, then a+ c < b + d.
■ Subtraction Property of Inequality
– If a < b, then a - c < b - c.
■ Multiplication Property of Inequality
– If a < b and c > 0, then ac <bc.
■ Transitive Property of Inequality
– If a < b and b < c, then a < c.
■ Substitution Property of Inequality
– If a + b < c and b = d, then a + d < c.

■ Exterior Angle Inequality Theorem

greater than the measure of either of its remote interior angle.

■ Theorem 36: Unequal Sides Imply Unequal Opposite Angles Theorem

– If two sides of a triangle are unequal, then the measures of the angles
opposite these sides are unequal, and the greater angle is opposite the
greater side.
■ Theorem 37: Unequal Angles Imply Unequal Opposite Sides Theorem
– If two angles of a triangle are unequal, then the measures of the sides
opposite these angles are also unequal, and the longer side is opposite
the greater angle.
