Understanding Computer System - Part 1

This document provides an overview of an online computer science course for students above 10th standard. The instructor has experience as an e-learning developer and web developer. The course agenda covers topics like computer systems evolution, encoding schemes, algorithms, and emerging trends in computer science such as AI, big data, IoT, cloud computing and blockchains. The document then provides details on what computers are and the components of a computer system including the central processing unit which carries out processing. It describes the CPU, its registers, arithmetic logic unit and control unit.

A computer would deserve
to be called intelligent if it
could deceive a human into
believing that it was human.

What are Computers?

A Computer is an electronic device that can be programmed to accept

data/information as an (input), process and generate some result
(output).

What are Computers?

A Computer system primarily comprises a CPU,

Memory, I/O devices and Storage devices.

All these components function together as a single

unit to deliver the desired output.

It can vary from a high-end server to personal

desktop, laptop, tablet or a smartphone.

Central Processing Unit

1) It is the electronic circuitry of a computer that carries out the actual

processing and usually referred as the brain of the computers.

2) It is commonly called Processor.

3) CPU generally is made of one or more Micro-chips, called as IC’s

(Integrated Circuits). These IC’s are made of Semiconductor materials.
IN BRIEF
Semiconductors are materials which have a
conductivity between conductors (generally
metals) and non conductors or insulators
(such as most ceramics).

Semiconductors can be pure elements, such

as silicon or germanium, or compounds such
as gallium arsenide or cadmium selenide.
Central Processing Unit

4) The CPU is given instructions through Programs.

5) Then the CPU fetches the data from the memory and performs Logical
operations/Calculations as per the given instructions.

6) Then, stores the results back to memory.

Central Processing Unit

7) CPU stores the data during processing in it’s local memory, also known
as Registers.

8) Registers are limited in size & number.

9) Different Registers are used for storing data or results.

Central Processing Unit

The CPU has 2 main Components other than Registers.

Logic Unit)
Central Processing Unit

 ALU performs all the Arithmetic and Logical operations.

 CU controls sequential instruction execution, interprets instructions and

guides data flow.
