Optical Sattelite Communication Seminar

This document discusses optical satellite communication. It begins with an introduction explaining that communication links between spacecrafts are an important part of space infrastructure and that using optical technology for satellite communication provides advantages over traditional microwave methods. It then explains that optical satellite communication uses light propagating in free space to transmit data between a ground segment and space segment. The document outlines the key requirements for optical satellite communication systems, including low size, weight and power for satellites. It discusses applications in security, defense, television and military. Advantages include higher data rates and bandwidth, lower power needs, and smaller antennas. The conclusion states that optical satellite communication is becoming an important part of future space infrastructure.

ABSTRACT

In future global communication systems, transmission links

between satellites and space stations or spacecrafts will play
and important role and have therefore found much attention
in recent years. Inter-orbit links (IOL) and inter-satellite
links (ISL) are under consideration. An IOL is a link
between a satellite in a geostationary orbit (GEO) and a
satellite or spacecraft in low-earth orbit (LEO), whereas ISL
denotes a link between two geostationary satellites.
INTRODUCTION

 Communication links between space crafts is an important

element of space infrastructure.

 Reduction in the number of earth stations needed to service the

system.

 Normally satellite communication can be made through use of

microwaves but if we use optical technology for the satellite
communication we have various advantages.
WHAT IS OPTICAL SATELLITE
COMMUNICATION
Optical satellite communication is also known as Free-space
optical communication (FSO) that uses an optical communication
technology which uses light propagating in free space to
wirelessly transmit data for telecommunication or computer
networking..

Satellite communication has two main components:

The ground segment
The space segment
GENERAL OPTICAL SATELLITE
COMMUNICATION
WORKING OF OPTICAL SATELLITE
COMMUNICATION
KEY REQUIREMENTS:

To realize massive satellite constellations using optical communications

technology, the following key requirements are identified:
• Low Size, Weight and Power (SWaP): Compared to RF-terminals,
optical communication terminals inherently support low SWaP, which
is key for cost effective satellite payloads.
• Low Recurring cost terminals is key for commercial exploitation,
and is mainly realized at the start of the design process.
• Low latency, high reliability and security optimally uses the
advantages optical communications have compared to RF terminals.
APPLICATIONS
It has found its applications in various fields such as
Security
Defense
Television
Military
• Everyday, new collaboration in the field of satellite technology and
communication appear.
• It can simultaneously serve a number of applications such as
Data readout of space sensors
Support of space exploration
Science missions
ADVANTAGES

• Higher data rates, so more information may be transmitted in less time and using lower
power.
• Lower overall power requirements.
• Thinner and light-weighted.
• The antennas can be much smaller.
• Cost of installation is very less.
• Optical fiber supports a bandwidth of very large range and one cable combines many
fibers.
• Higher carrying capacity.
• Less signal degradation.
• Long lifespan.
DISADVANTAGES
• Low power—Light emitting sources are limited to low power.
Although high power emitters are available to improve power
supply, it would add extra cost.
• Fragility—Optical fiber is rather fragile and more vulnerable to
damage compared to copper wires. You’d better not to twist or
bend fiber optic cables too tightly.
• Distance—The distance between the transmitter and receiver
should keep short or repeaters are needed to boost the signal.
FUTURE ACTIVITY
• A future in the field of satellite communication that has great ecological
significance is the sending of a large number of satellites into orbit, which
will have the role of monitoring and controlling the pollution of the ocean.
• In future, optical satellite communication is most likely to find applications
in satellite-oriented air traffic management, customized land mobile radio
broadcasting, and aeronautical satellite communication.
• Another future trend in the field of satellite communication is certainly the
increased employment opportunities, due to new projects, jobs and
generally greater needs in this sector.
• One of the future trends that many are looking forward to is the satellite
network being developed by the private space company SpaceX. The goal
of this project is to provide cheap internet in various, remote locations and
to form a unique internet network that will make life easier for all people.
CONCLUSION

Optical Satellite Communication promises to become an important

element in future space infrastructure and considerable development effort
is currently under way all over the world.
Optical Satellite communications have evolved tremendously over
the past few decades and have significantly impacted our lives. It is
estimated that in the future satellites will be used to provide cheap internet
even in remote locations, the development of a large number of satellite
earth stations is expected, as well as the use of a huge number of satellites
to control ocean pollution. It only remains for us to see in which other areas
satellite communication will intervene and thus improve our lives, as it has
done so far.
