This document defines key concepts related to atomic mass. It begins by explaining that relative atomic mass is the comparison of an atom's mass to a standard atom, such as carbon-12. It then defines the atomic mass unit (amu) as 1/12 the mass of one carbon-12 atom. The amu is used to measure the mass of individual atoms. For example, one hydrogen atom has a mass of about 1.008 amu. The document concludes by noting that the average atomic mass takes into account the relative abundances of an element's different isotopes.

SOME BASIC CONCEPTS
OF CHEMISTRY - CHAPTER-1 ATOMIC MASS LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the session you will be able to
● Define relative atomic mass
● Understand how to measure the mass of an atom ● Define amu How do you think you can calculate the mass of a single atom? Relative Mass A relative mass of an object is the comparison of the mass of the object to a standard object.
Relative Atomic Mass
The mass of an atom when compared to another is known as the relative atomic mass ATOMIC MASS UNIT ● The relative atomic mass of an element is the average mass of one atom of the element when compared with 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12, which is taken as 12 units
● 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12 is named as 1 atomic mass unit
● The mass of one carbon atom is 12 amu
● 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12 is named as 1 atomic mass unit(amu)
● The mass of one carbon atom is 12 amu
1 amu= = 1.66056×10–24 g
Let us try to calculate,
the mass of hydrogen atom = 1.6736 x 10 –24g
------------------------ 1.66056 x 10–24 g = 1.0078 amu = 1.0080 amu
● ‘amu’ has been replaced by ‘u’ which is known as unified mass
AVERAGE ATOMIC MASS -for isotopes
Average atomic mass is the weighed average of all isotopes
To calculate the atomic mass of these isotopes ,
and their relative abundance (per cent occurrence), the average atomic mass of that element is calculated EXAMPLE 1 PROBLEMS FOR PRACTICE
