On Diode Applications

Diodes can be configured in series or parallel circuits and are used in various electronic applications like rectifiers. A half-wave rectifier uses a single diode to remove one half of the input signal and establish a DC level. A full-wave rectifier uses two pairs of diodes wired in parallel to rectify both the positive and negative regions of the input signal. The peak inverse voltage rating of diodes is also an important specification to consider in rectifier circuits to prevent damage to the diodes.

Applications of Diode

Constructions + Characteristics + Models

Applications
Once the basic behavior of a device is understood, its function and response in an infinite
variety of configurations can be examined.

Diodes can be configured either in series or parallel, adjusted as per their applications.

There are plenty of diode applications in the electronic circuits including, half-wave
rectifier, full-wave rectifier, clipper, and clamper.

Half-wave Rectifier
Over one full cycle, the average of +ve and –ve is 0

When employed in the recfitication process, a

diode is typically referred to as a rectifier.

By employing a diode with respect to input

signal, it will remove one-half the input signal
and establish a DC level.

DC level can be calculated using following

equation :

Peak Inverse Voltage (PIV)
Peak Inverse Voltage (PIV) or Peak Reverse Voltage (PRV) rating of the diode is of primary
importance in designing the rectification system.

It is important to maintain the voltage rating in the reverse-bias region to prevent diode from being
damaged.

To achieve full wave rectification, 2 pairs of diodes can be wired parallel wise

Full wave rectifier is used to rectify both +ve

and –ve regions of the given sinusoidal wave.
