Actions in case of FIRE

What is fire
Fire is the rapid oxidation of a material in the exothermic
chemical process of combustion, releasing heat, light, and
various reaction products. Slower oxidative processes like
rusting or digestion are not included by this definition. ...
The flame is the visible portion of the fire.

What are the three elements
that make FIRE?

FIRE EXTINGUISHING METHODS
COOLING : removal of HEAT. (by water. generally for
Class "A" )

STARVATION : removal of FUEL (by cutting fuel


supply)

SMOOTHERING : removal of OXYGEN. (by using


CO2 or DCP- dry chemical powder)

CHAIN BREAKING MECHANISM : break the


chain. (by DCP) or (BLANKETING)

FIRE classification

• Class A: Wood, paper, cloth, trash, plastics. Solid


combustible materials that are not metals. (Leaves Ash).

• Class B: Flammable liquids (gasoline, oil, grease,


acetone).
Any
non‐metal in a liquid state. (Can Boil).

• Class C: Flammable gases (methane, propane).

they must be trained in
its use.

Duties & Responsibilities
 Wear full PPE
 Make sure that a suitable fire extinguisher
is kept near the work location.
 The area where welding, grinding etc will
take place should be wet or provided with
a flame-resistant fabrics (Fire Blanket) to
be placed around or underneath the
exposed location.
 Check and make sure that each welding
area is protected by fire proofing cover
(Habitat) for prevent flying sparks.
 Check and make sure the availability of
Gas Monitor in Hot work activity area.
 Fire Watcher must ensure that sparks
are contained, and conditions of the
Hot Work Permit are being met.
 He will leave 30 min after checking the
area on hot work completion.

Duties & Responsibilities
 Make sure that good ventilation is maintained in order to avoid any contamination
of fumes, gases, or dust to which welders may be exposed.
 Make sure that the area is free/ cleaned from any combustible materials that can
catch fire.
 Consider the wind direction and always be up wind.
 Make note of the nearest muster point as well as the nearest emergency call
point.

Rules for Fighting
Fires Fight fire from up wind direction.

 Start fighting the fire from safe distance (2


– 5 m) away.
 Direct the Fire Extinguisher nozzle to the
base of the fire.
 Sweep the nozzle from side to side.
 Do not leave the fire area unless you are
sure that the fire is completely out.
