Weather & Climate: 7TH Grade

Here are the key differences between climate and weather: - Weather refers to short-term conditions of the atmosphere such as temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind and clouds at a certain time and place. - Climate refers to the long-term pattern or average weather conditions of a place or region, generally over a period of at least 30 years. Some major factors that can affect climate and weather include: - Latitude - Areas closer to the equator tend to be warmer while areas farther from the equator tend to be cooler. - Altitude - Higher altitudes generally have lower temperatures since air pressure decreases with increasing altitude. - Proximity to large bodies of water - Oceans influence climate since water

Weather Climate

certain day or hour. sunshine.
Factors that Affect Climate
Latitude or distance from the equator
when the area is farther from the equator, the air
temperature is lower. When the place is closer to
the equator, the air temperature is higher.
Factors that Affect Climate
Prevailing wind
Any particular place in the country is due to its
geographical location and the different wind
systems.

In meteorology, the study of earth’s atmosphere,

there are two sides to any island—the windward
side and the leeward side.
The Windward
Side
This is the colder, wetter side of an
island. It is subject to consistent
winds that blow cool, moist air
upward.
The Leeward
Side
As condensation occurs, it releases
heat into the surrounding air. This
effect is called latent heat of
condensation
Factors that Affect Climate
Altitude or height above sea level
The air temperature decreases as the altitude
increases.
Factors that Affect Climate

Distance from the sea

This factor shows how ocean heats up
and cools down slowly than land. Thus,
coastal areas tend to be cooler in
summer days and warmer during winter
days which have the same latitude as
well as altitude.
Factors that Affect Climate

Topography
The topography of an area can
influences the weather and climate.
Factors that Affect Climate
Ocean Currents
• Outside of Earth’s equatorial areas, weather
patterns are driven largely by ocean currents.

• Currents are movements of ocean water in a

continuous flow, created largely by surface winds
but also partly by temperature and salinity
gradients, Earth’s rotation, and tides.
Ocean currents act much like a conveyor belt, transporting warm water and
precipitation from the equator toward the poles and cold water from the poles
back to the tropics. Thus, ocean currents regulate global climate, helping to
counteract the uneven distribution of solar radiation reaching Earth’s surface.
Climate Change
refers to long-term
shifts in temperatures
and weather patterns.
The following are the climatic reasons of how green
gases occur as the earths’ responses in these changes.
