SETS:

An Introduction
Continuation
Two ways of defining a SET:

1) Roster or Listing method.

It is done by listing the elements.
{ 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 }

2) Rule method or Set-builder notation.

It is done by describing the elements.
{ whole numbers less than 7 }
Two ways of defining a SET:
Roster or Listing Rule or Set-builder Notation

{ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 } { set of counting numbers less than 7 }

{ 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 } { set of odd numbers less than 17 }

{ 1, 2, 3, 6 } { set of factors of 6 }

{ 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, … } { set of even numbers }

{ 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 } { set of multiples of 10 from 10 to 50 }

{ 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 } { set multiples of 5 from 5 to 30 }

Cardinality of a set
{ set of counting numbers less than 7 }

{ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 } n (W) = 6 finite

{ set of odd numbers less than 17 }

{ 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 } n (O) = 8 finite

{ set of even numbers }

{ 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, … } n (E) = Infinite

Cardinality of a set
{ set of multiples of 10 }

{ 10, 20, 30, 40, … } n (M) = infinite

{ set of factors of 6 }

{ 1, 2, 3, 6 } n (F) = 4 finite

{ set of odd numbers }

{ 1, 3, 5, 7, … } n (O) = Infinite
Cardinality of a set
{ set of pandas in the Philippines }

n (P) = 0 finite

{ set of triangle with 4 sides }

n (T) = 0 finite
