How to read a decimal


In order to read a decimal number
the WHOLE NUMBER part is read keeping PV chart of the whole number in mind and after the decimal point
each number is read INDIVIDUALLY.

Expanded form of decimals
The expanded form of decimals means the sum of the place value of
each digit in the given decimal number.
for example 23.45= 20 + 3 + +
or
2 tens + 3 ones+ 4 tenths + 5 hundredths
or
20+3+0.4+0.05
Standard Form

In order to write the standard form we need to keep place


value chart in mind.

For example 2 tens + 4 tenths 10 = 20.4


TYPES OF DECIMALS

Like decimals

Decimal numbers which have which have same number of digits after decimal.

for example- 9.87, 5. 45, 6.78

Unlike decimals

Decimal numbers which have different number of digits after decimal point are
called unlike decimals.

for exampe- 9.8, 5.45,6.875


How To Convert Unlike To Like Decimals

Unlike decimals can be converted into like decimals by adding the required number
of the zeroes at the end.

for example- 3.85, 5.987, 1.2, 3.2

3.850, 5.987, 1.200, 3.200


Conversion of fractions into decimals with denominator 2, 4, 5, 20,
25, 50 and 125
In order to convert the fractions with denominators 2, 4, 8, 20, 25, 50 or125 we first need to make denominators
ten, hundred or thousand.
Q Convert the fractions into decimals
Remember:-
2 x 5 = 10
4 x 25 = hundred
8 x125 = 1000
20 x 5 = 100
25 x 4 = 100
125 x 8 = 1000
