Week 6

Good Afternoon, Little

Scientist!
We’ll start in a few minutes …
Lesson 6 :

Changes in Materials that are Useful

and Harmful to One’s Environment
(continuation)
Objectives:
After going through this lesson, you are expected to:

• give examples of changes in materials that are Useful and Harmful to the
environment
• enumerate ways on how to minimize the harmful effects of the changes
in materials to the environment
• suggest ways on how to improve the useful effects of the changes in
materials
Let’s have a quick review!
Identify if the following changes in materials is USEFUL or
HARMFUL to one’s environment.

1. Throwing detergents to the river.

2. Dumping garbage on the streets.
3. Cutting old clothes to make rugs.
4. Smoke from vehicles.
5. Making picture frames from old balikbayan box.
Study the pictures below:
Mother Earth is a living being in the
universe that concentrates energy and
life, while giving shelter and life to all
without asking anything in return.

She is the past, present and future; this is

our relationship with Mother Earth
Our Mother Earth

is currently facing a lot of

environmental concerns.
The environmental problems like global
warming, acid rain, air pollution, urban
sprawl, waste disposal, ozone layer depletion,
water pollution, climate change and many
more affect every human, animal, and nation
on this planet.
Changes in the materials may either be useful or
harmful to the environment.

Recycling some materials such as shaping an old tire

into a plant pot, using old newspaper to wrap items, or
using plastic containers as storage of water are useful
changes in the environment.
When garbage is thrown in rivers, the water becomes
polluted. When plastic trash is burned or when
exhausts from vehicles are unchecked, these produce
smoke that can pollute the air.

These changes are harmful to the environment.

How are we going to address these problems?

Do you think you can do something?

Are you willing to help our mother nature?

How?
How to minimize these HARMFUL EFFECTS?

Remember the 5 Rs:

REDUCE
REUSE
RECYCLE
REPAIR
ROT
How to minimize these HARMFUL EFFECTS?
If there are changes in materials that are
harmful, there are also changes in materials that
are GOOD or USEFUL to one’s environment.

Can you name one of those?

Changes in materials that are useful to
one’s environment:

Bending/hammering
metals for building
construction

ripening of fruits
Cooking food
As a pupil, can you suggest ways
on how to improve the useful
effects of changes in the
materials?
Look at the following pictures, can you suggest ways on
how to make these more useful?
REMEMBER:

Everyone can take little steps to save the earth.

We must not waste water and avoid the use of plastic.
Moreover, we must plant more trees and encourage
people to not pollute the environment.
