Population Variance Is Known

The document discusses hypothesis testing when population variance is known. It provides the test statistic formula and critical values for different significance levels (0.05, 0.01, 0.001) for one-tailed and two-tailed tests. Examples are given to demonstrate hypothesis testing for claims about a population mean and testing if a sample mean is less than a hypothesized population mean.

Example

The leader of the association of jeepney drivers claims that the

average daily take-home pay of all jeepney drivers in
Pasay City is P400.00. A random sample of 100 jeepney
drivers in Pasay city was interviewed, and the average daily
take-home of these drivers is found to be P425.00. Use a 0.05
level of significance to find out if the average daily take-home
pay of all jeepney drivers in Pasay City is different from
P400.00. (Assumption: Population variance is P8,464.00.)
Given; Step 1: State the Ho & Ha
µ= 400
Ho : µ= 400 Ha: µ ≠ 400
= 425
Step 2: Set the level of significance & determine the
= 8,464 critical value
n=100 a= 0.05 0.5-0.025 = 0.4750
a= 0.05 Critical value : ± 1.96
=
1.96
= 0.025 1.96

0.025 0.025
Step 3: Compute the test value Given:
µ= 400
= 425
= 8,464
= 8,464
= 92 n=100
a=0.05

1.96 1.96

z= z= 2.72
0.025 0.025

2.72
Step 4: Make a decision whether to accept or reject the null
Hypothesis

Reject the Null Hypothesis and Accept The

Alternative Hypothesis

Step 5: Formulate a conclusion

The average daily take- home pay of jeepney

drivers is not equal to P400
Boys of a certain age are known to have a mean weight
of 𝜇=85 pounds. A complaint is made that the boys living in a
municipal children's home are underfed. As one bit of
evidence, 𝑛=35 boys (of the same age) are weighed and found to
have a mean weight of 𝑥¯ = 80.94 pounds. Used a= 01
significance level to find out that Boys of a certain age is less
than 85 pounds. It is known that the population standard
deviation 𝜎 is 11.6 pounds . Based on the available data, what
should be concluded concerning the complaint?
µ= 85
Step 1: Ho: µ= 85 Ha: µ < 85
= 80.94
= 11.6 Step 2: a= 0.05 Critical value: -1.645
n= 35
a=0.05

0.01 + 2.33 or – 2.33 ± 2.58

step 3: compute the test value

Z= -2.07 µ= 85
= 80.94
= 11.6
--1.646 n= 35
a=0.05

-2.07
Step 4:

Reject the Null hypothesis and accept the

Step 5:

The boys of a certain age is less than 85

pounds.
