Answer:
25; 33.33, 41.67; 45.45,
46.88, 47.62;
The population
increases but does not
exceed 48 million.
What is a rational
function?
Difference between rational
equation and rational
inequality?
• An equation involving rational
expressions is called
RATIONAL EQUATION.
• An inequality involving
rational expression is called
RATIONAL INEQUALITY.
ACTIVITY 1 WHAT’S MORE !!!p.19

Tell which of the following defines

a rational function?
ACTIVITY 2 WHAT’S MORE !!!p.20

Determine whether the given is a

rational function, a rational equation, a
rational inequality or none of these.
= f(x)=
xamples:

Abstraction:
 Rational Function - can be written in
the form f(x) = N (x) , where N (x) and
D (x) D(x)
are polynomials and D (x) is not a zero
polynomial.

Examples
Rational Equation- is an
equation that contains one or
more rational expressions.

Examples
Examples: f(x)=

Rational Inequality- is composed of

rational expressions combined with a
≤, ≥, <, or > sign.

Examples
Application:
(Flashcards)

Function Equation Inequality
HOW TO SOLVE IT? Solving Rational
Equation
PROCEDURE:
a. Eliminate denominators by
multiplying each term of the
equation by the least common
denominator.
b. Note that eliminating
denominators may introduce
extraneous solutions. Check the
solutions of the transformed
equations with the original
equation.

Interval and Set Notation:

An inequality may
have infinitely many
solutions. The set of
all solutions can be
expressed using set
notation or interval
notation.

INTERVAL SET NOTATION
HOW TO SOLVE IT? Solving Rational Inequality

PROCEDURE:

1. Rewrite the inequality as a single

rational expression on one side of the
inequality symbol and 0 on the other
side.
2. Determine over what intervals the
rational expression takes on positive
and negative values.
HOW TO SOLVE IT? Solving Rational Inequality
PROCEDURE:
a. Locate the x-values for which the rational expression is zero or
undefined (factoring the numerator and denominator is a useful
strategy).
b. Mark the numbers found in (i) on a number line. Use a shaded circle
to indicate that the values is included in the solution set and a hollow
circle to indicate that the value is excluded. These numbers partition the
number line into intervals.
3. Select a test point within the interior of each interval in (ii). The sign of
the rational expression at this point is also the sign of the rational
expression at each interior point in the aforementioned interval.
4. Summarize the intervals containing the solutions.
Example 1 Solve the inequality :
