USING CITATIONS

You and your friend are sitting one sunny day

towards the end of May. When he exclaims, “I
am going to Boracay tomorrow!” “It’s going
to start raining tomorrow,” you reply. He
asks, “How do you know?” You tell him about
the weather forecast you heard that night
from a reputable meteorologist.
What you are doing is citing sources. When making a
point in your essay, you need to provide evidence. To
make your analysis credible, you need to learn the
conventions in citing sources. There are hundreds of
ways to cite sources. But, in this module you will learn
how to cite ideas from academic or literary works (e.g.
research paper or poems) and to be responsible scholars
by giving credit where credit is due. This is going to be
your tiny steps towards bigger research projects. And, it
is going to be essential to your communicative skill and
will aid you in your writing tasks.
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
1. Differentiate the citations between APA and
MLA styles;
2. Explain the importance of citations in writing;
and
3. Write sentences using the in-text citations with
the correct formatting according to APA or MLA
styles.
1.What type is your source?
2.What information have you
gathered?
3.Why are citations important?
4.Is it wrong to not cite sources?
Why or why not?
WHAT IS CITATION?

Citation is telling readers that you are using

another person’s ideas or writing to support
your own claim or ideas. It is important that
you cite your source to avoid plagiarism.
When writing for a research project, you will
be gathering information for your citation.
ELEMENTS OF CITATION
Citation can be divided into two elements.
The parenthetical (In-text) citations are
citations to original sources that appear in
the text of your paper. At the end of your
paper, you need the reference list
citation which includes the list of all
authors or articles in the body of your text.
Typically used in behavioral
and social sciences such as
psychology, sociology, history,
and communication. It’s also
used in business courses.
The APA style calls for three kinds of
information to be included in in-text
citations. The author's last name and the
work's date of publication must always
appear, and these items must match exactly
the corresponding entry in the references
list. The third kind of information, the page
number, appears only in a citation to a direct
quotation.
1. When do you include
the page number in APA
style?
Example 1
In his novel El Filibusterismo, alludes the force labor in
the making of “Pyramids, the Lake of Moeris, and the
Colosseum in Rome” to the inequity of some Spaniards
to ordinary Filipino people (Rizal, 1896).
Example 2 In his novel El Filibusterismo, alludes the force
labor in the making of “Pyramids, the Lake of Moeris, and
the Colosseum in Rome” to the inequity of some Spaniards
to ordinary Filipino people. (Rizal 5)
What are the differences
between APA and MLA
styles’ in-text citations
format?
Reference List Citation Format
Reference list is the list of sources you refer to in your
writing. Citing the reference may look different and depends
on your citation style.

• MLA is the style preferred by the Modern
Language Association, and it is used most often
in the humanities, including literature, art, and
theatre. At universities where the administration
has decided to adopt just one documentation style
across all courses, APA is often the style of choice
because it is an effective style for multiple areas
of academic study.
1. What field of studies
would likely use MLA
style? APA style?
The MLA style follows the author’s
last name and the page number
method in writing the in-text citation.
See in-text citation formats for book source in APA
and MLA style below:
(Rizal, 1896) – APA style
(Rizal 5) – MLA style
Citation is telling readers that you have use another person’s ideas or works in your
own text. The elements of citations are parenthetical (in-text) citation and reference
list citation. You can either use APA style or MLA style when writing. But, be sure to
ask your teacher of his/her preferred format. Whenever you are doubtful if you need
to cite words, ideas, facts or figures, cite your source! You have to cite your source
to avoid plagiarism. APA format is preferred by the American Psychological
Association and is typically used in behavioral and social sciences such as
psychology, sociology, history, and communication.
