CLIP.
Lets do the activity 2 on page 362
to 364.

Since we don’t have enough

materials to do the activity, let me
show to you a short video about
Boyle’s law in activity 2.
Q1. What happens to the volume
of syringe as the set of weight is
added on top of it?

Q2. what happens to the pressure

of syringe as the set of weight is
added?
BOYLE’S LAW
BY:
JEMELLE C. BAGUIO
What happens to pressure
in space when volume in
that space increases and
temperature remains the
same?
What is Boyle’s law?
Boyle’s law
This theory was discovered
by Robert Boyle, a 17th
century scientist.
The theory also known p
r
e
E
M
U

as Boyle’s Law state: if

L
s O
s V
u
r
e

the temperature remains e

r

constant, the volume of

u
s V
s O
e L

p M
E

a given mass of gas is

inversely proportional to
the absolute pressure.
How can we write Boyle’s Law as
formula?

Pά P-pressure
P1V1=C V- volume
P2V2=C C-constant
P1V1=P2V2 (at constant T and n)
Write Boyle’s Law as formula:
Lets try to use the formula.
Compute the final pressure.

A sample of hydrogen has a volume

34L at pressure of 75mmHg. What
will be the volume of the gas if the
pressure increased to 760 mmHg?
Given:
V1= 34L
P1= 75 mmHg
P2= 760 mmHg
V2=?
Solution:
Formula: P1V1=P2V2

(75mmHg)(34L)=(760mmHg)(?)
V2= 3.45L
A gas occupies 12.3 liters at a pressure of
40.0 mmHg. What is the volume when the
pressure is increased to 120.0 mmHg?
Solution:
P1V1=P2V2

=
(40.0 mmHg)(12.3L)=(120.0mmHg)(?)

V2= 4.1L
The gas in a Balloon has a
volume of 4L at 100 kPa. the
balloon is released into the
atmosphere, and the gas in it
expands to a volume of 8L. What
is the pressure on the balloon at
the new volume?
Given: Solution:
V1=4L P2=
P1= 100kPa P2= 50kPa
V2= 8L
P2=?
Formula:
P2=
For your quiz, bring out 1/2
sheet of paper and solve the
given problems.
1.A sample of nitrogen gas (N2)
has a volume of 12.0 liters and a
pressure of 760.0 mmHg. When
the gas is released, it gives 32.0L
of nitrogen. If temperature is the
same what is the new pressure of
nitrogen?
Given:
P1= 760.0mmHg
V1= 12.0 Liters
P2=?
V2= 32.0L
2.A gas has an initial pressure of
5.85 atm and an initial volume of
3.65 L. What is the new volume
of the gas if the pressure drops
to 3.00 atm. Assume temperature
and the number of moles are
kept constant.
Given:
P1= 5.85atm
V1= 3.65L
P2= 3.00 atm
V2= ?
