Introduction
Natural Dyes:
Derived from plant, insect, and mineral extracts.
Considered safe due to nontoxic, noncarcinogenic, and biodegradable nature.
Cause no pollution or wastewater problems.
Additional Benefits:
Plants used for dyeing often have medicinal properties.
Some plants exhibit remarkable antimicrobial activity.
Antimicrobial Finishing:
Fibers, especially natural ones like cotton, create conditions for bacterial growth.
Antimicrobial finishing of textiles is crucial for protective, decorative, and technical
products.
Study Focus:
Investigates thyme and pomegranate peel as natural dye sources for cotton dyeing.
Examines dyeing performance and antimicrobial effects.*
Introduction
Definition of "Natural Dye":
Encompasses dyes from natural sources like plants, minerals, and animals.
While natural dyes have benefits, their dye content and color yield are generally lower than
synthetic dyes.
 Disadvantages of Natural Dyes:
 Color fastness issues, including problems with color yield, reproducibility, and dying
procedures.
 Difficulties in achieving consistent and lasting color fastness properties.
 Use of Mordants:
 Dyeing industries utilize mordants with natural dyes to enhance affinity to textile
materials.
 Mordants are metallic or mineral salts added to the dye bath.
 They intensify the dye or bring about color changes. This highlights the challenges with
natural dyes and the role of mordants in addressing some of these issues in the dyeing
process
Objective
 To explore and showcase the potential of pomegranate peel as a natural
dye source for wool, addressing color fastness challenges associated with
natural dyes.
 Additionally, the presentation aims to highlight the use of mordants to
enhance dye affinity, intensify color, and produce various dye shades
with improved color fastness properties.
 Through this, we aim to contribute to sustainable and antimicrobial
textile dyeing practices, aligning with eco-friendly and health-conscious
trends in the textile industry.
