Parallel Operation of

a Single Phase
Transformer
Parallel Operation of a Single
Phase Transformer
The necessity of parallel operation of transformers
is felt when the amount of power to be transformed is
greater than that which can be handled by one
transformer.

Phase Transformer
Important conditions which must be fulfilled if two or more operate successfully
in parallel to deliver a common load are:

1.) The voltage ratings of both primaries and secondary's must be

identical. This obviously implies that the transformation ratios are the
same. Small difference are permissible if the resultant circulating currents
can be tolerated.

2.) The transformer must be properly connected with regard to polarity.

3.) The equivalent impedances should be inversely proportional to the

respective kVA ratings.

4.) The ratio of the equivalent resistance to equivalent reactance of all

transformers should be same.

No-Load Operation. When the load is removed

( 𝑎1 − 𝑎2 ) 𝑉 𝑠
𝐼 𝑐=
𝑎 1 𝑍 𝑒1+𝑎2 𝑍 𝑒 2
Example problem 1
The following information is given in connection with two
transformers that are connected in parallel:
Transformer 1 Transformer 2
Rating = 25 kVA Rating = 35 kVA
2,360/230 volts 2,400/230 volts
Ze = 0.08, in secondary terms Ze = 0.06, in secondary terms

Calculate the secondary circulating current at no load.

𝑆 1=𝑆𝑡 (𝑍2
𝑍 1+ 𝑍 2 ) 𝑆 2=𝑆𝑡 (𝑍1
𝑍 1+ 𝑍 2 )
Example problem 2

Two single phase transformers A and B with equal turns have

impedances of (0.5 +j3) ohm and (0.6 + j10)ohm respect to secondary.
If they operate in parallel, determine the kW share of A if they share a
total load of 100 kW at 0.8 lagging.
Example problem 3

Two single-phase transformer A and B are connected in parallel. The

have same kVA ratings bit their resistances are respectively 0.005 and
0.01 per unit and their leakage reactances 0.05 and 0.04 per unit. If A is
operated on full-load at a p.f. of 0.8 lagging, what will be the load and
p.f. of B?

 Unequal Ratios of Transformation
- When two transformer having unequal ratios of transformation are
connected in parallel, the total load current will divide in accordance with the
following equations:
Example problem 4
The transformer delivers a total load of 46 kVA. Calculate the
secondary currents and the kilovolt-ampere load of each one.
Transformer 1 Transformer 2

Seatwork 1
The following information's is given for two transformers connected in
parallel and delivering a total load of 300 kVA. Calculate the load
current and kilovolt amperes delivered by each transformer.
