Algebraic Expressions

Prepared by :
Grade 7 Teachers
Casimiro A. Ynares Sr. MNHS
Algebraic expression are named
according to number of terms
MonomialOne term
Ex.
Binomial Two terms
Ex.
Trinomial Three
Ex. terms
Degree
The degree of the algebraic expressions is the
highest exponent of an expression with one
variable or the highest sum of the exponents of
the variables in a term of the expressions.
Example: - 8xy

The degree is 2 because the highest exponent is 2

COEFFICIENTS
Numerical Literal coefficients
numerical factor variables including
coefficients
exponents

Example: -x+3

The numerical coefficients are 4 and -1.

The literal coefficients are x2 and x.
Variable
A variable is a letter or symbol which
represents a number.

Example: - 8xy + 3

The variables are x and y

Constant
The constant of the algebraic expressions is
a number with fixed value.

Example: + 8xy - 3

-3 is the constant

Degree
Term
Term – a term is a constant or a variable or
constants and variables multiplied together.

Example: - 8xy + 3

The terms are 4x2, -8xy, and 3

• Terms in algebraic expression are
separated by plus (+) or minus (-) signs.

• When the operations between variables or

variable and number is multiplication or
division, it is considered as one term only.

• 4xyz is a single term algebraic expression so

as since the operations involve are
multiplication and division.

The Language of
Algebra
What is “Algebra”?
It is a branch of
mathematics that
involves expressions
with variables.
Example of algebraic
expressions:

𝒙 +𝟕
𝟐
𝒃 − 𝟒 𝒂𝒄
𝟐𝝅𝒓
How are they named?

Expressions are usually

named by the last
operation to be
performed in the
expression.
Take note of “GEMDAS”:
1. Product
2. Difference
3. Quotient
