The document discusses the principles of aerodynamics as they apply to automobiles, including the classification of aerodynamics and the forces acting on vehicles such as lift, drag, weight, and thrust. It highlights the importance of drag, which consists of frontal pressure and rear vacuum, and lists various aerodynamic accessories that enhance vehicle performance. Additionally, it outlines methods for evaluating car aerodynamics, including wind tunnel testing and the use of specialized software like ANSYS and CATIA.

AERODYNAMICS IN CAR

BY:

INTRODUCTION
 AERODYNAMICS :

Study of forces generated by motion of air on moving body

 CLASSIFACATION OF AERODYNAMICS :

External and Internal , Subsonic , Supersonic, Hypersonic

 FIELDS OF APPLICATION :

 Design of automobiles

 Aerospace engineering

 Maritime engineering
Aerodynamic Forces On
Aerofoil
Consider a aerofoil move through air, forces which are considered
for aerodynamic analysis over aerofoil are ,

1.Lift ( causes body to rise )

2.Drag ( fluid resistance )

3.Weight

4.Thrust
LIFT :
Force that acts perpendicular to the direction of air flow around
the vehicle . It caused by Bernoulli`s effect.

DRAG :
It is the sum of all external forces in the direction of air flow , so
it acts opposite to the direction of the object.

WEIGHT :
It is actually just the weight of the object that is in motion . The
force of gravity acting on the car .

THRUST:
When a body is in motion a drag force is created which opposes
the forward motion of the object so thrust can be the force produce
opposite direction to drag.
DRAG :

 In vehicle aerodynamics drag is comprised primarily of

two force :

1.Frontal pressure

2.Rear vacuum

 Frontal pressure is caused by the air attempting to flow

around the front of the car.

 Rear vacuum is caused by the hole left in the air as the

FRONTAL PRESSURE :

 The air molecules travelling along the sides

of the car at atmospheric pressure, a lower
pressure compared the molecules at front of
REAR VACUUM :

This rear vacuum is crucial in aerodynamics

because it generates a force that pulls the
vehicle backward, often called "drag“. When
airflow moves over a vehicle, it naturally

Accessories for Cars :

 DIFFUSER

 SPLITTER

 SIDE SKIRTS

 REAR WING

 BUMPER

 SIDE DUCT
METHODS FOR EVALUATING
AERODYNAMICS OF CARS
1.WIND TUNNEL :
Researchers use wind tunnels
to learn more about how air interacts
with vehicles . Some wind tunnels are
big to hold full-size versions of
vehicles.

Purpose of wind tunnels :

1 . Airflow analysis

2 . Design optimization

3 . Testing Safety and

 2.SOFTWARES :
Now a days a large number of software`s are developed
for the analysis and optimization of aerodynamic in
automobiles.

Most commonly used software`s are ANSYS,CATIA.
