Black Start Operation

Objective:

 Study BS Operation.
 Describe simple BS Operation during Black out.
 Presentation of Black Start operation with BS40 & GT12.
In Black out configuration:

 All GTs (9FA) and STs Transformer unit bay circuit breaker (52L) shall
be open.
 The 400 KV bus tie circuit breaker and bus bar section associated to
the unittransformer bays to be energized, should be lined up as per
NCC instruction.
 Following the instruction by NCC, the external lines bay circuit
breakers will be opened.
Situation in out plant in Black out
condition:
 MV system.
 Emergency diesel generator.
 Emergency Bus bar.
Plant Electical system description:

 BS MV, LV busbar. Source of power.


 BS 40 MCC source.(Normal & Stand by)
 Common service MV, LV bus bar.
 Block -1 MV, LV, Essention bus bar, Emergency bus bar.
 EDG power supply.
Starting BS40 during Black out
situation:

Pre condition:
1 GT12 generator circuit breaker 52G OPEN
2 BS40 generator circuit breaker 52G-BS OPEN
3 Block 1 unit auxiliary switchgear bus 1,2 & tie breaker 11BBA11GS151,1 2BBA12GS081
OPEN
4 Black start switchgear bus 1 incomer at 00BBA11 00BBA11GS091 OPEN
5 Unit auxiliary switchgear 12BBA12 supply from 00BBA11 12BBA12GS101
OPEN
6 10KV Common services switchgear (00BBA21) incomer 00BBA21GS011 OPEN
7 Essential bus (10BMA11/12) normal incomers 11BFA11GS061/1 2BFA12GS071)
OPEN
8 Block#1 EDG In service
9 Supply from EDG to both essential bus 10BMA11/10BMA 12 Available
Field Operator Rule:

 In the BS40 MCC, change the selector switch from MCC to


“generator” position.(Generator means from essential bus).
 Select “normal” incomer at BS40 MCC incomer breaker selector
switch. Ensure both
 Normal and stand by incomers will be in OPEN position.
BS 40 Start up:

 Initiate START command for BS40


 Diesel engine start after 120 sec warm up timer
 Purging speed of 900 rpm (18%)
 Ignition ON after completion of purge timer (180 sec)
 Speed in 20% of nominal speed and the excitation start-up in auto
 Fin fan cooler fans (u/f motors) 88FC 1, 2, 3,6,7,8 start on auto
 Ratchet disconnected at 3098 rpm approximately
 BS40 MCC incomer “NORMAL” breaker 52AR close automatically at 95%
 speed
 BS40 FSNL reach
 In the DCS screen “Gen Dynamic Generation Scheme”, for BS40, select and
 confirm “DEAD BUS PERM SET 1” in green color. After selection, this button
 will be changed to red color.
BS 40 synchronisation:

 Open Black Start Mark VI screen “Synchronize”


 Select and confirm “DEAD BUS” in sync Control selection
 After the confirmation, message “Close command 52G” will be
appeared at the bottom.
 Select and confirm “MASTER RESET”
 Select and confirm “Close command 52G”
 52G will be closed on dead bus
BS 40 synchronisation & energise
busbar:
 Select ON “Iso Standby” on BS40 Start-up Screen
 BS40 transformer will be energized
 Initiate “CLOSE” command for 52L of BS40
 10KV black switch gear bus – 1 (00BBA11) will be energized
 Energize Block 1 unit auxiliary switchgear bus 2 as follows
 “CLOSE” 00BBA11GS091
 “CLOSE” 12BBA12GS101
 Energized Block 1 unit auxiliary switchgear bus 1 by “CLOSE” tie breaker
(11BBA11GS151)
 Normalize MV and LV system of block 1
 Normalize black start and common services MV and LV system
GT12 Star up:

 GT 12, Start up
 Synchronisation on dead bas.
 12 BAT, 12 BBT energisation.
 52 L breaker operation & wait for NCC instruction.
 Closing the 10KV Unit Auxiliary Switchgear bus 2 Incomer
Shut down BS40

 BS 40 should be stopped after confirming that the grid is stable. To


shut down BS40, following sequence to be followed
 In the BS40 MCC, keep the selector switch in “MCC” position. (BS40
MCC).
 Select “Stand by” at BS40 MCC incomer breaker selector switch.
Stand by breaker 52AS closes and NORMAL breaker (52AR) opens
automatically
 Initiate “STOP” command for BS40
