Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Sports
Points of interest related to Sports on Wikipedia: Outline – Portal – Category – WikiProject – Alerts – Deletions – Stubs – Assessment – To-do |
This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Sports. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.
- Adding a new AfD discussion
- Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
- Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
- You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Sports|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
- There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
- Removing a closed AfD discussion
- Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
- Other types of discussions
- You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Sports. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
- Further information
- For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

- Here is my problem with these stand-alone articles. All four disciplines are often not contested. There are often not enough competitors to award a bronze medal, and in some cases, even a silver medal. Many of these competitions featured no more than two or three participants. And most of the competitors who are listed are redlinked or unlinked (ie. themselves not notable). The competition results and scores are included (or should be included) on a skaters' individual article. The medal results are included on the parent article (in this case, Finnish Figure Skating Championships). But these nations with small national championships are just not worth trying to maintain individual articles for each competition. Bgsu98 (Talk) 02:47, 31 December 2024 (UTC)

- Redirect all. Such articles create huge fragmentation and repeat data that we need and already carry, with data that we do not need to carry as a general encyclopedia. The extra data is the domain of sport databases. Figure skating is not a big sport in the Netherlands. Speed skating is. Even there, where we could justify the annual spinoffs, we suffer from too much data and too little writeup. gidonb (talk) 04:12, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

- Draftify: I don’t see WP:TOOSOON is a valid reason for deletion in this instance. According to WP:FUTURE, notable and highly likely future events should be included (such as 2032 Summer Olympics). Given that the venue has already been confirmed, the article could simply be updated or moved after the 2025 edition concludes or closer to that time and so I strongly oppose deletion.--— MimsMENTOR talk 09:14, 23 December 2024 (UTC)

- Comment: I am not sure if WP:TOOSOON applies to such a big event. We already have a page for the 2030 FIFA World Cup and 2034 FIFA World Cup. It is about coverage from independent sources at least for the announcement of the event, and maybe the ongoing preparations. I can see that 3 out of the 4 sources are from the ICC but the event is mentioned in Times of India, SportStar, Free Press Journal, India Express, Sky, The Nation, The Sporting News, and Hindustan Times. FuzzyMagma (talk) 10:52, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
- @FuzzyMagma: because, it's only the year and hosts that have been confirmed. Qualification and Format haven't been announced yet and could change, thus they are just speculations so, WP:CRYSTAL. Unlike, 2034 FIFA World Cup which at least has more confirmed stuffs rather than speculations. Vestrian24Bio (TALK) 13:12, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
- A wrong understanding of WP:CRYSTAL it seems. There is no requirement that the qualification process or format for future events must be announced in advance for the article to be standalone. Speculation is unfounded, as these competitions are based on clear qualification rounds and verifiable outcomes. — MimsMENTOR talk 09:04, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
- All of those sources listed above are passing mentions of the 2029 tournament existence in articles mostly dedicated to the 2025 tournament or wider issues like Pakistan/India match hosting. None of them are [[WP:SIGCOV]. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:31, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

Relisting comment: Please note that WP:CRYSTAL doesn't apply here, as the event has been announced by reliable, verifiable sources; no speculation involved. And while WP:TOOSOON is a useful essay, it does not overrule WP:GNG and other guidelines when it comes to deletion criteria. Please focus on the notability of the event based on sources, rather than your preference as to when it should be added here.

- Comment to clarify my point in the way that the relister wants: it is way too soon for there to be significant coverage of this event, as the only known information is the host country (the announcement of which is WP:ROUTINE coverage). Therefore, it does not pass WP:GNG and is unlikely to do so for a few years, and thus should be deleted. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:29, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

Does not pass WP:GNG. The sources listed in the article do not provide WP:SIGCOV. I did find another source from the Chillicothe Gazette not listed in the article. However, even with that inclusion, I do not believe it would pass. It possibly has WP:OR, as well. Grahaml35 (talk) 14:58, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

- Comment there are several WP:SIGCOV about him in the Chillicothe Gazette, [1][2][3][4](P1/P2). He would however need SIGCOV from at least one other publication to pass WP:GNG. He was the starting QB for Marshall so there might be some coverage in a publication that covers the school if someone knows where to look. Alvaldi (talk) 21:12, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- That would be the Herald-Dispatch, presumably, which will certainly have print coverage of Skinner from 2005 and 2006, but the earliest mentions online seem to be from 2008. I didn't remember Skinner, but since we know that his career was covered by the Herald-Dispatch (and likely other news sources no longer available over the internet), then he seems to pass the general notability guideline. I note that the question is whether the sources exist, not whether they are available over the internet, or cited in the article. And anyone who started as quarterback in any Marshall games will be discussed, not merely mentioned, in the Herald-Dispatch. So this would be a keep. P Aculeius (talk) 17:04, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- Keep As P Aculeius pointed out, the Herald-Dispatch isn't on newspapers.com. However, I was able to find the paper's archives and it looks like Skinner has plenty of coverage. So this passes GNG when combined with Alvaldi's sources above. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 18:27, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

Non-notable rivalry of two teams that have only played each other 24 times since 1977. Frankly I've never heard of this even being called a rivalry between these two teams. Draftification was objected to, and seems to be largely based on one article writer's opinion. Hey man im josh (talk) 16:50, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

- Delete. Fails GNG in terms of establishing a rivalry exists. The article clings to a CBS blog that lists this series among the top rivalries of the 2000s. While CBS is certainly a top authority on NFL coverage, this particular blog has only a couple paragraphs of content on this series and does little to describe the teams as “rivals” outside of the title. Even if this was significant coverage of the teams as rivals, which it is not, GNG would still not be met as it requires multiple sources. Frank Anchor 17:10, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- Weak Delete mainly because that CBS article is not very indicative of significant coverage, but this [5] provides a bit more to their early 2000s playoff matches, though I haven't seen any other sources as in-depth as this one. Conyo14 (talk) 18:35, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- Delete Basically every team is a rival with every other team. If all the article can do is outline a history of meet-ups and doesn't describe how the teams and fans actually view the rivalry to give it some substance, there is no reason for an article. Reywas92Talk 20:08, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. Just a random pairing of two NFL teams with no memorable games that I can recall (nor listed in the article) to spark a rivalry. There seem to be some other, equally questionable "rivalries" in the List of NFL rivalries, e.g. Colts–Jaguars rivalry. Clarityfiend (talk) 20:09, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- @Clarityfiend: There are certainly some questionable rivalry articles. With that said, you'd be unlikely to see a rivalry article between two division opponents deleted. I would however support the nominations of a number of other rivalry articles that aren't about division opponents. Hey man im josh (talk) 22:08, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- There does actually seem to be some coverage of this, e.g. 'A lot of history' between Bucs and Eagles ("Not too long ago, the Eagles-Buccaneers rivalry was one of the fiercest non-divisional matchups in the NFL"), Tampa Bay looks back to when the rivalry was real, Bucs, Eagles know each other well: Rivalry forms as they've met six times since 1999, Eagles, Buccaneers renew rivalry at new stadium, Tampa Vs. Philadelphia Rivalry Has A Deep History. BeanieFan11 (talk) 16:16, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- I think my issue is that this is largely predicated on meeting in the playoffs for 3 straight years. That doesn't create a long term rivalry in my opinion, more of a flash in the pan of a rivalry instead. My perspective is that rivalry articles should be more long standing, instead of relying on what amounts primarily to a 3-season stretch that most people have forgotten about. Hey man im josh (talk) 19:25, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- @BeanieFan11 - Here's some more 1, 2, 3, 4. KatoKungLee (talk) 22:33, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- Looking at these sources, source 1 appears to be from a SI fan site, #2 is from one of the teams (so not independent), #3 uses language like "used to be a rivalry" (so not anymore), and "will become a rivalry again" (so not right now), #4 is fine but quite local and #5 is similar but places even less of an emphasis of this being a real rivalry. I think a select merge regarding this rivalry at List of NFL rivalries#Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Philadelphia Eagles using some of the sources from Beanie and moving it to the historical rivalries of that article is the best outcome as the WP:NRIVALRY isn't met here as a standalone article with a lack of sustained coverage from non-local outlets. Similar to a recent AFD on an NFL game, this article fails to have lasting coverage outside of the typical and routine reporting regarding a sporting event. Although definitely a unique penalty that had impacts to the overall season for both teams, this type of issue occurs every season. A year later, and this game is no longer discussed, which is reflected in the relevant sources in the article all existing within a few days of the game. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 21:25, 27 December 2024 (UTC)

- Keep: I understand your perspective on where this comes from, but I disagree with your conclusion. While the references sourced in the article is from when the incident occurred, this is play is still relevant and discussed with the same amount of frequency as other games cited in the List of nicknamed NFL games and plays article, where I derived my inspiration to make this article from. I want to specifically highlight Madhouse in Maryland, Hail Murray, and the Colts Catastrophe as entries on that list that are regular season NFL games that have their own articles. I believe that Decker Reported has the same, if not more merit, to warrant it's own article. As to your point on how the game is no longer discussed, I would disagree with that point directly. This matchup and penalty has been in constant discussion leading up to, and after, the 2024 regular season matchup between the Cowboys and Lions, which many saw as a revenge game. And in many ways, it was a revenge game, with Taylor Decker reporting as an eligible receiver on multiple plays throughout the game. Also, this was a match where the Lions ran multiple trick plays on offense, further teasing the Cowboys. If you think it would give the article more merit to remain on Wikipedia, I can certainly add that in as another section, discussing how the results of Decker Reported effected the next game between the Lions and Cowboys. Plainawesome (talk) 23:29, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
- While I respect your right to disagree and vote how you see fit, I wanted to note that WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is not a valid reason to keep an article.
- The Lions also run trick plays almost every game now, such as the fake trip last week. We've had linemen throwing passes and multiple linemen trying to catch or run as well, such as Penei's run which won the angry run of the week, or Skipper's recent touchdown reception. Hey man im josh (talk) 23:56, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
- Delete: Anyone who knows me knows I'm a big Detroit Lions fan and homer, and I work on content related to them whenever I can. If I felt there was a valid reason to keep this, I would certainly argue that, but I agree with Gonzo on this one. Delete as failing to have lasting coverage / impact. Hey man im josh (talk) 23:47, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
- Out of curiosity, since this is only the second Wikipedia article I have ever created (first for a sport); what constitutes lasting coverage/impact? If I were to include links to news articles talking about the penalty from this current NFL season, would that count? What if there were news articles, not from local/home team sources, but national sources discussing the penalty that are recent? I'm just trying to figure out how infamous a play has to be before it warrants it's own article. Plainawesome (talk) 00:31, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
- Plainawesome, this is somewhat a struggle and is subjective. Playoff games tend to have more inherent notability in them, so if something interesting happens, then that tends to get talked about more. Its often hard to write about a game when it hasn't been that long, unless its notability is plainly obvious in the moment. Think Fail Mary for an example. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 13:52, 30 December 2024 (UTC)

Matchup has only been played 15 times ever; only twice this millennium pbp 22:17, 21 December 2024 (UTC)
- To clarify a concern above, the crux of this article isn't really GNG, it's more UNDUE, and the general idea that "does this topic warrant a stand-alone article?" I think there's a clear consensus that we DON'T need an article about every pair of teams that have played 15 times; even though each of those are likely to pass GNG because every football game played in the past few decades has a few newspaper or online articles written about it. - The sources posted in this discussion establish that the rivalry is notable outside of the teams individual notabilities as they discuss the rivalry itself in detail. - Keep nomination does not address any policy rationale as to why this should be deleted, a very similar problem that this article's second AfD had six years ago. That AfD was a unanimous keep, as was the first one, and I'm not sure that anything has changed to overturn the prior overwhelming consensus. The fact that the teams have played "only twice this millennium" is entirely irrelevant to the notability of the article as notability is not temporary. PCN02WPS (talk | contribs) 23:31, 21 December 2024 (UTC)
- Comment. The thing that has changed since the first two AfDs is that we have tightened standards on what constitutes a true rivalry. If we are simply judging whether is a true "rivalry", I think the answer is "no". At the prior AfD, I noted: "Personally, I don't this is a 'rivalry' at all. There's no geographic tie, no regularity of play or scheduling, no fan base hatred, etc." I voted to "keep" because I have long believed that historically significant series can be notable ever where they are not true rivalries. My view on that point has not gained a lot of traction. Cbl62 (talk) 23:54, 21 December 2024 (UTC)
- Outside of the single decade (1981-90) when Alabama and Penn State played regular-season games every year, they have only met five times (1959, 1975, 1979, 2010, and 2011). I think this is really stretching the bounds of what can be considered either a rivalry or a notable series. With the expanded playoffs, it will become increasingly common for major programs like these to meet more frequently. This is probably setting a precedent to include yet more "non-rivalry" rivalries just because there are a couple of pregame articles hyping to the series as a rivalry. Cbl62 (talk) 00:17, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

- Just because GNG has been passed doesn't necessarily merit a STAND-ALONE article pbp 20:55, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- This is a really difficult one, because sources say it's a rivalry, but it's also not a rivalry. Instead they had one famous bowl game followed by a 10 years when they played each other where both teams were really good, leading some sportswriters to call it a rivalry, but many others such as [6], [7] and [8], [9] don't. I think the question really is - can a group of games between two teams be notable for reasons other than being a rivalry? Sports rivalries are not presumed notable. Articles on sports rivalries, such as Yankees–Red Sox rivalry, should satisfy the general notability guideline.
This rivalry passes WP:GNG, and therefore WP:NRIVALRY, with several significant sources from multiple independent publications covering it and specifically calling it a rivalry. - Keep passes GNG per Alvaldi. It doesn't appear to be much of a rivalry anymore but they played each other for ten straight years in some big-high ranked games. Perhaps this source said it best: Kids these days. They just don't have the respect for the Alabama/Penn State rivalry. Maybe the lead could be changed to "was" an American college football rivalry... ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 13:39, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- Keep. In my heart, I share User:SportingFlyer's view that this is not a true rivalry, but I also acknowledge that my heart is not a reliable source. As User:Alvaldi points out, there are multiple reliable sources spanning multiple years treating this as a "rivalry". Accordingly, and though my heart disagrees, my brain tells me this should be kept. Cbl62 (talk) 20:12, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- Would you have any objection to renaming this to a "series," as that does appear to be more common than "rivalry" when you look at articles that have been written about the games these teams played? SportingFlyer T·C 22:13, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- I would support that. Cbl62 (talk) 13:01, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
- I'm on a fence regarding that since it was descriped multiple times as one of the major intersectional rivalries in college football.
- "
Alabama's annual game against Penn State, which has become one of the major intersectional rivalries in college in football, may not be played after 1990.
" (Association Press, 10 September 1987) - "
The Alabama-Penn State game 'has become one of the nation's top intersectional rivalries. No other school in the Southeastern Conference plays a game of such national preminence annually. Neither do many schools around the nation.
" (Bill Lumpkin, Birmingham Post-Herald, 9 September 1987) - "
Since 1981 the two schools have met yearly in what has been one of college football's great intersectional rivalries, one which is devoid of animosity and cloaked in mutual respect.
(Ron Bracken, Centre Daily Times, 28 October 1989) - "
The series has been one of the nation's most exciting intersectional rivalries.

- @Cbl62@SportingFlyer On second thought, the established period of their rivalry was from their 1979 game and through their 1990 game and the article covers their history before and after that. I would support renaming this to the Alabama–Penn State football series as long as it is clearly stated in the article that it was described as one of the nations top intersectional rivalries and it will still include the Category:College football rivalries in the United States. - Comment: as a result of recent victories, Penn State will play Notre Dame for the 20th time next week. They've played Notre Dame more than Alabama but no article exists for Notre Dame-Penn State. It's ridiculous that Alabama-Penn State has an article when many more-frequently-played games do not. - Keep. The AP describing this as
"Alabama's annual game against Penn State, which has become one of the major intersectional rivalries in college football"
is the kind of sourcing an article like this needs, and it's here. Not routine coverage.
- Would also support move to Alabama–Penn State football series as an ATD and as a precedent for more "series" articles that are perhaps not "true rivalries". PK-WIKI (talk) 17:15, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

- Weak keep if renamed List of NFL quarterbacks who have beaten every team in the league and trimmed. (Also remove the criterion "beaten every team he faced at least once", which is just made up.) It satisfies NLIST, but only for every team, not every team but n (n=1, 2, 3, etc.). This is a rare achievement which requires a QB to go to another team and then beat his former team. Clarityfiend (talk) 19:16, 18 December 2024 (UTC)

- Where are the sources that support this addition? I don't see any. (The closest I can find is that Mahomes is the youngest to beat all 31 other teams, and that's a different kettle of fish.) Otherwise, this is just an unwarranted stretching of the boundary. Clarityfiend (talk) 10:38, 19 December 2024 (UTC)

- Trim and merge to List of NFL individual records#Quarterback wins. Specifically, I would add a bullet for those retired QBs who have beaten all but one team if they spent their entire career with one team. This would remove Ken Stabler, Alex Smith and Kerry Collins because they played for multiple teams. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 20:11, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
- Kerry Collins is listed in three of the sources above though. Here is an excerpt: "Oddly, one other quarterback, Kerry Collins, beat 31 teams, but the team Collins never beat, the Dolphins, wasn’t one of the teams he played for. Collins actually started against the Dolphins four times while playing for four different teams, but lost all four games." ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 20:18, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
- I find it more notable that a QB spent their entire career with one team and beat every other team in the league (31/31) than being traded and still not beating every team in the league (31/32). Collins wouldn't be on the list of "all but one" if he had never been traded since he never beat the Dolphins. In the end, that will be a decision to be made by the closing administrator. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 20:27, 18 December 2024 (UTC)

- If sources were the only criterion, then we would have hundreds of times more articles than we do now. I was featured in my hometown newspapers covering my Eagle Scout project, so should I have a Wikipedia article? The answer is no, because I do not meet WP:GNG despite the fact I can provide sources. At what point do we stop adding names to these lists? Your argument, to me, seems more along the lines of WP:ILIKEIT than putting forward any policy-based or guideline-based argument. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 19:15, 19 December 2024 (UTC)

- @Clarityfiend: You asked about my sources, so I provided a hypothetical to show that I can find sources for someone not notable (I specifically said I do not meet GNG). In reference to the pet peeve, I'm not typing the colons and asterisks. That is Wikipedia's "Reply" function probably just adding a colon to the end of whatever indenting text already exists. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 23:06, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
- Sports writers have written about QBs with wins against all teams as a group (I'm stretching just to include the two who beat the 28 then-existing teams), as demonstrated by WikiOriginal-9. - I frankly don't think "Quarterback beat all teams but three" (or four) merits mention in an encyclopedia at all. I would merge everything above two into quarterback records. However, given the size of List of NFL individual records, and the key role played by quarterbacks in the game, I would split out a separate List of NFL quarterback records. BD2412 T 20:10, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
- That is an arbitrary cutoff not supported by the sportswriters. Guys who are at 31 are mentioned, if at all, merely in passing and not as a group. Clarityfiend (talk) 23:47, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Clarityfiend: It is certainly less arbitrary than the current situation, with up to four teams listed. For reasons set forth in the discussion above, it makes sense to list those who have only failed to defeat one team because that will include those who spent their entire career with the one team that was therefore not defeated. It is no burden on the encyclopedia to list those who have defeated all but two teams just the same. BD2412 T 18:51, 26 December 2024 (UTC)

- Comment Amongst the differing views for this AfD, I see the rationale for deletion and keep being solid. However, that happens with WP:TRIVIA. This is trivia that may or may not cross the GNG threshold. I do not think the merge target really works since the record for
Most NFL teams defeated at least once, career
is already there, but at the same time deleting for the sake of cruft or lack of GNG may work. That being said, perhaps a no consensus may be what is determined. I would rather this article be trimmed, and written to fit some other obscure stats that probably have GNG. Conyo14 (talk) 23:39, 3 January 2025 (UTC)- Simply put, there are enough articles on it from a variety of different sources to make it eligible for a stand-alone article. If there needs to be a merge or editorial discussion, that can happen elsewhere. SportingFlyer T·C 00:52, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

Non-notable cricketer, who fails WP:GNG. Has only played in T10 cricket, not any FC, List A or T20 competition which can often help increase significant coverage. Don't need separate season articles for this minor cricket tournament, all of the reasons for merge and redirecting 2023 and 2024 seasons (2023 AFD and 2024 AFD) apply to the 2019 and 2022 seasons as well. Joseph2302 (talk) 15:04, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

- Keep as both do have WP:SIGCOV from a number of international sources for them. They also fulfil WP:GNG therefore should not be deleted. Furthermore the rationales for the other seasons being deleted are not relevant to these two as 2024's ruling was on the grounds of no RS's (which the two here have loads of) and 2023's was on the grounds of a lack of SIGCOV (which both here have several demonstratively) and for being poorly source (see above for why that's not relevant here as both are well sourced). As an aside as well, AFD is the wrong forum to be proposing a merge. That's what WP:PM is for. The C of E God Save the King! (talk) 16:54, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

- Delete. Lack of significant coverage. A 1-match career is notable only in the most exceptional of cases. Geschichte (talk) 16:06, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- Comment the length of career cannot be relied upon to provide an indication of the notability of the career of a sportsperson. This has been discussed a number of times, both in relation to cricket and other sports, and formed at least some of the discussion around the revision to NSPORTS a couple of years ago. A variety of quantifiable limits were proposed at various times and non were deemed to be acceptable. Balmain's notability rests with whether to not he is notable, nothing else.
- In this case, there is clearly some notability and some sources exist which tell us things about him. I suspect that there are more – I'm not certain where McCarron has found him to be a soldier from, but that would indicate that other sources can be presumed to exist. Are those sources enough to show notability? Not sure – there are other passing references to him in PapersPast, including some nice little quotes, but the limited amount of time he appears to have spent in New Zealand means that there aren't many. Fwiw, I declined the initial PROD, partly because I wasn't awfully happy that the nomination had been made seriously, partly because I wasn't sure that a search of PapersPast had taken place, and partly because I wanted to work on List of Nelson representative cricketers, which now exists. That provides an obvious ATD, allowing the article to be redirected to there if it's considered not to be notable. Much of the prose content of the article could be the basis for a note applied to Balmain' list entry, rather like the notes added at List of Otago representative cricketers, for example. Certainly redirection would appear to be the worst case outcome. I can see merit in keep; I don't see a reason to delete given the ATD. Blue Square Thing (talk) 17:12, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- Redirect to List of Nelson representative cricketers. I found this article interesting and searched for some time to try and find content to bolster it but alas without success. Purely on a policy basis it probably fails the significant coverage test but I would prefer to follow @Blue Square Thing in their suggestion of redirecting with the prose content added as a note on the target page.

- Keep This was a major international competition, featuring two of the main cricketing nations, (and almost including a third with the West Indies almost competing) that happened over multiple years, and was well covered in the news when it was happening between 1996 and 1999 (when it ended due to a well-covered series of issues that stemmed from the start of the Kargil war in 1999). I'm using print sources, as the event occured over 25 years ago, but I'm not having any difficulty coming up with references. - Draftify: I don’t see WP:TOOSOON is a valid reason for deletion in this instance. According to WP:FUTURE, notable and highly likely future events should be included (such as 2032 Summer Olympics).

- KEEP, but merge with corrections — this article seems like a duplication of the already-existing Reo Nakamura (footballer, born 1990) and hence a merge into the existing article may be more appropriate, once the errors have been corrected. It seems like the author of the article has made a spelling error, instead of “Reo” (the correct first name) they have put “Ryo” as the name of the subject and (for some reason) changed their DoB from 1990 to 1989.
- The article's own source shows the name of the subject as “Reo”, not “Ryo” (as the author has put) and the correct DoB of the subject as 1990, not 1989 (as the author has put). The reason the others (CC: @GiantSnowman, @CommunityNotesContributor, @QEnigma) could not verify/find sources was because the author wrote the incorrect information on the Wikipedia article. The career statistics section, especially, I feel could be merged into the already existing article.

- For Reo Nakamura (correct name), I was able to find some through this Google search and this one — 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 just to name a few.
- At the moment, it appears the player plays for Ezra F.C., in the Pepsi Lao League 1.

- WP:FOOTYN is an essay, not a formal Wikipedia policy or guideline, and has no relevance in AfD's. The subject must pass WP:GNG with multiple significant sources from publications independent of the subject. Alvaldi (talk) 13:47, 31 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Geschichte: Of the seven sources, only the fifth one signals significant coverage on Nakamura as it tells about his personal life. However, one SIGCOV is not enough; the whole GNG needs multiple instead. Transfermarkt is obviously unnecessary to be added to Wikipedia articles as it is claimed unreliable. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. - Hey,
- I understand that the article about Malachi Sharpe may currently lack sufficient coverage to meet Wikipedia’s notability standards. Before the page is potentially deleted, I wanted to kindly ask if you might have any suggestions or tips on how it could be improved or expanded to better meet those criteria.
- Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. I appreciate any guidance you can provide.

- Apologies for not elaborating in nomination with relevant links. Please see WP:GNG and WP:NSPORT (in particular WP:SPORTBASIC) for establishing notability for the subject. The problem is generally a lack of independent significant coverage from secondary sources, noting that United In Focus would come under fan-site and therefore fails to contribute to this. CNC (talk) 11:15, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- @CommunityNotesContributor Is United In Focus a simple fan-site though? Even if it focuses solely on United, this looks to be alot more than just a simple fan blog. It has a rather detailed editorial Policy and significant number of experienced journalists working for them. Alvaldi (talk) 20:20, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- I think it's subjective, I agree with editorial oversight it's beyond a traditional fan site. At the same time it's nothing more than a website for fans, and also lacks the ability to be truly independent from subject. CNC (talk) 21:10, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- Generally, sport websites publish articles that appeal to the audience that they are targeting. Football sites appeal to the average football fan. This site seems to just narrow it down to the average Manchester United football fan. If the site is not run by the player/club/league etc. then it is independent from the subject. Alvaldi (talk) 14:11, 31 December 2024 (UTC)
- Personally I'd categorise FC fan sites differently than football-specific sites like Goal.com or OneFootball (when not sync feed). It's not a coincidence that United In Focus is United specific, instead it's intentional. That said, given it's owned by GTV Media Group, it could well be considered independent in this case. CNC (talk) 15:13, 31 December 2024 (UTC)
- I have no problem with sites that are team specific rather than league or football specific as long as they are professionaly run with editorial oversight. I would also think it would open up a pandora's box to reject such sites because with the same argument someone could state that Goal.com is not independent of football related subjects because it only covers football specific stories. All that said, I'm not arguing that the subject is notable, just that significant articles from United in Focus should go towards WP:GNG. Sharpe would still need significant articles from other publications over some extended period of time. Alvaldi (talk) 15:57, 31 December 2024 (UTC)

A clear WP:A7. There are no references; same happens in ptwiki. Always played for 2nd tier clubs and has no news article mentioning his name. Reference 1 is over 10 years old and from a local newspaper where he is mentioned as an "Assistant manager" of an, at the time, League 3 side. Not even mentioned (Ctrl+F) on the 2nd reference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikisempra (talk • contribs)

- Keep. Very difficult to search, even in conjunction with the clubs he has been associated with. The reason is that "the other Rui Borges" also had spells in Trofense, Famalicão, Académico de Viseu and up until a few days ago they were both employed by Vitória. But it is possible to do a WP:BEFORE with hits around 2000. [48] [49] is not overwhelming but it's a start and I know there are more. The nomination statement is highly inaccurate. Geschichte (talk) 20:47, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
- Comment - no comment on notability but BDFutbol confirms that he had 221 appearances in the top tier of Portugal, which is quite a lot. This means that the nominator's statement of "Always played for 2nd tier clubs" is false. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 21:16, 27 December 2024 (UTC)
- Not false. Second tier doesn't mean Second Division. You are welcome to read Wikipedia's policy on the notability of players which clearly states: Sports biographies must include at least one reference to a source providing significant coverage of the subject, excluding database sources. No user has yet addressed the problem, there are no references apart from Diary de Noticías, which mentions Borges as an "assistant manager". Many proeminent Professors, even Ivy League ones, have seen their pages deleted for less. As I stated, you are welcome to find references. Wikisempra (talk) 23:22, 29 December 2024 (UTC)

- Keep He may not have been one of Portugal's greatest players, but he is still a relevant athlete for having played in major clubs and scored goals. He was instrumental in C.D. Trofense promotion in 2008 and has had a long career with significant involvement in Primeira Liga. The user are filing request to delete the article due to conflicts with the other Rui Borges, as he have attempted to do on PTWIKI. Vazafirst (talk) 08:50, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
- Regardless of the player's relevance on a Portuguese third division side, none of the editors address the point. As per the guidelines, the article meets WP:A7. E.g.: Many Portuguese/Spanish actors have had their pages deleted despite significant coverage. Apart from the Diary of Notícias there are no references. The "Vizela Diary" meets criteria for WP:QUESTIONABLE. Wikisempra (talk) 23:13, 29 December 2024 (UTC)

- Comment - there are enough secondary-party sources involved, from The Daily Evergreen, The Spokesman-Review, and Lewiston Morning Tribune. [50][51][52][53] Whether that's enough sigcov in combination per WP:BASIC is another story, but certainly no need for third-party sources here per GNG. There is otherwise coverage beyond WP:ROUTINE, so per WP:SPORTBASIC it's likely there are enough sources for notability, even if not a guarantee. If it's a case of too soon then WP:DRAFTIFY would be a better option here. CNC (talk) 10:00, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
- Third-party sources are a requirement for GNG... JoelleJay (talk) 03:26, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- Redirect. The Daily Evergreen is not independent and so does not count. The Spokesman-Review and Lewiston Morning Tribune articles are brief, routine blurbs about her signing lightly refactored (as in, would absolutely fail our close-paraphrasing rules) from the same press release, and additionally are far from the SPORTSCRIT #5 requirement, let alone the SUSTAINED SIGCOV in multiple IRS sources required by GNG. I see zero reason to draftify considering her contract ended in 2022 and there is no evidence she continues to play professionally. JoelleJay (talk) 03:25, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- Apologies, per above I mixed up third-party with tertiary, ie party and person. Agree the student newspaper isn't independent here, and given your reasoning that the subject hasn't been playing since 2022, best to redirect instead. CNC (talk) 09:52, 29 December 2024 (UTC)

Cannot find independent WP:SIGCOV for this Canadian judoka to pass WP:NSPORT; all sources appear to be trivial mentions or non-independent bios/interviews. - Hi there. The article's sources demonstrate that Hagen is both a provincial and territorial-level director and coach (currently for the province of Saskatchewan, previously for the Northwest Territories), and an official commentator for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation during the past two Olympic Games. Canada is a federal country and Hagen's roles in Saskatchewan and the NWTs are as the chief administrator of those federal units on behalf of Judo Canada, the national regulator. Accordingly, while Hagen's own sporting career does not make him notable, I think that he meets the administrative / coaching notability requirements for sport (director and head coach of two provincial or territorial programs), and he also has a public profile as the national broadcaster's (only) official judo commentator for the Olympics. CanadianJudoka (talk) 18:43, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
Has a public profile
as a commentator is not a criterion for notability, and there is no SNG under NSPORT either for for martial arts coaches or for provincial-level team coaches, so he will need to pass WP:GNG, which requires significant coverage in multiple independent, reliable, secondary sources. That's what's missing. Dclemens1971 (talk) 19:01, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

- Furthermore, the page provides a comprehensive overview of Canadian tennis players who have secured Grand Slam titles across various categories, including professional singles and doubles, as well as junior competitions. This compilation highlights Canada’s achievements in the tennis world, showcasing players like Bianca Andreescu, who won the US Open women’s singles title in 2019, and Gabriela Dabrowski, a multiple Grand Slam champion in doubles and mixed doubles.
- The page is well-structured, categorizing achievements by tournament type and player gender, which facilitates easy navigation and understanding. It also includes references to credible sources, enhancing its reliability.
- Given the significance of these accomplishments in Canadian sports history, this page serves as a valuable resource for those interested in the nation’s contributions to tennis. It not only celebrates individual athletes but also reflects the growth and development of tennis in Canada.
- In conclusion, the “List of Canadian Grand Slam tennis champions” Wikipedia page is a pertinent and informative entry that merits its place on the platform. It offers valuable insights into Canada’s tennis milestones and serves as a useful reference for enthusiasts and researchers alike and that is why it should be maintained. Haddad Maia fan (talk) 20:06, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

Where is your example of multiple reliable sources discussing these Canadian tennis players as a group? All I can see is a synthesis of different news articles, created by you, on different Grand Slam wins by different Canadian players but not a single source linking them together. - It seems to me that all (or at least a vast majority) of this user's edits are AI written. They have already been warned of this once on their user page. And quite a few of their tennis articles that I had recently PRODed also seem to be written by AI. Adamtt9 (talk) 20:32, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- I know we can't forbid the use of AI on Wikipedia but it should be discouraged where possible. Spiderone(Talk to Spider) 20:37, 1 January 2025 (UTC)

- Delete Taking "keep" to its logical conclusion, there should be a Wikipedia article like this for every country that has had a tennis grand slam winner: List of American Grand Slam tennis champions, List of Botwwanan Grand Slam tennis champions, List of Danish Grand Slam tennis champions. It's a nationalistic but not a notable topic. Ira Leviton (talk) 21:44, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- Delete: per nom Asteramellus (talk) 23:39, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- Delete As has been stated if there is an article for Canadian Grand Slam tennis champions then there has to be one for every country and that is wholly unnecessary particularly with tennis being an individual sport.

Fails notability, he probably won some youth medals but achieved nothing in major events in senior level. The article claims he won two silver at 2012 and 2013 Asian Senior Championship but that's not correct and he never even made it to those competitions. Sports2021 (talk) 01:13, 24 December 2024 (UTC)

- Comment: Not sure how much help it is, but this source suggests he did in fact have a silver at the Asian championships and a bronze at world championship. [58] Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 08:25, 24 December 2024 (UTC)
- Unfortunately this source fails to mention these medals are in cadet level. this is his resume in UWW database. as I said he never won anything special in senior level. Sports2021 (talk) 10:32, 24 December 2024 (UTC)

- Delete I agree with Sports2021, lacks notable accomplishments, in my opinion the subject fails notability. Lekkha Moun (talk) 08:32, 1 January 2025 (UTC)
- Delete I see no significant coverage and no achievements that would meet any SNG. Success in youth events is not sufficient for WP notability. Papaursa (talk) 04:18, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
