18. (a) Draw a simple circuit diagram in which a capacitor is used. Explain the function of
the capacitor in the circuit drawn. [4 marks]
(b) A capacitor of capacitance 56 µF, which is initially uncharged, is connected to a
supply which gives a constant current of 0.24 mA. Calculate
(i) the time taken for the potential difference across the capacitor to become 28 V.
[2 marks]
(ii) the energy stored by the capacitor when the potential difference across it is 28 V.
[2 marks]
(c) Two capacitors of capacitances 20 µF and 45 µF are connected in series with constant
26 V supply. The capacitor are initially uncharged. Calculate
(i) the total circuit capacitance, [2 marks]
(ii) the charge delivered by the supply, [2 marks]
(iii) the charge on each capacitor, [1 marks]
(iv) the potential difference across the capacitor of capacitor of capacitance

19. (a) Give the definition of resistivity [2 marks]

(ii) the power supplied to the 8.50 Ω resistor [2 marks]
(c) Explain why the potential difference across the terminals of a battery is normally
lower than the battery’s e.m.f. Under what condition the potential difference across a
battery’s terminal equals to its e.m.f ? [3 marks]
(d) In a cathode tube, there is a current of 200 µA in the vacuum between the cathode
and the anode. Calculate
(i) the time taken for a charge of 5.0 C to be transferred, [2 marks]
(ii) the number of electrons emitted per second from the cathode. [2 marks]
