General Instructions:
(1) There are 16 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C,
Section D and Section E.
(3) All the sections are compulsory.
(4) Section A contains eight questions, Six MCQ and Two Assertion
Reasoning based of 1 mark each,
Section B contains two questions of two marks each,
Section C contains three questions of three marks each,
Section D contains one case study based questions of four marks and
Section E contains two long answer questions of five marks each.
(5) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one question in Section B,
one question in Section C, one question in each CBQ in Section D and all three questions in Section E. You
have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.

𝐶2 . Both the capacitors have same plate separation but plate area of 𝐶2 is greater than that of 𝐶1 . Which line

10. A point charge +𝑄 is placed at point 𝑂 as shown in the figure. Is the potential difference 𝑉𝐴 − 𝑉𝐵
positive, negative or zero?

SECTION-C
11. The thickness of a conductor continuously decreases from its one end (𝐴) to another end(𝐵). It is
connected across the terminals of a battery. What will be the effect on the value of
(a) Electric field,

(b) Current density, and

(c) Mobility of the electron

12. A cube of side 20 cm is kept in a region as shown in the figure. An electric field 𝐸⃗ exists in the region
such that the potential at a point is given by 𝑉 = 10𝑥 + 5, where 𝑉 is in volt and 𝑥 is in 𝑚.

13. Define the term drift velocity of charge carriers in a conductor and write its relationship with the current
flowing through it.
SECTION-D
14. Case study based question- (1 marks each)
Consider a dipole with charge q1 = +q and q2 = - q placed in a uniform electric field E, as shown in
figure. The dipole experiences no net force but experiences a torque τ given by τ = p x E, which will tend to
rotate it (unless p is parallel or antiparallel to E). Suppose an external torque τ is applied in such a manner
that it just neutralizes this torque and rotates it in the plane of paper from angle θ0 to θ 1 at an infinitesimal
angular speed and without angular acceleration. The amount of work done by the external torque will be
given by

SECTION-E (5 marks each)

15. (a) An infinitely long thin straight wire has a uniform linear charge density 𝜆. Obtain the expression for
the electric field (𝐸) at a point lying at a distance 𝑥 from the wire, using Gauss' law.
(b) Show graphically the variation of this electric field 𝐸 as a function of distance 𝑥 from the wire.
OR
Using Gauss law, derive expression for electric field due to a spherical shell of uniform charge distribution 𝜎
and radius 𝑅 at a point lying at a distance 𝑥 from the centre of shell, such that
(i) 0 < 𝑥 < 𝑅, and
(ii) 𝑥 > 𝑅

16. (a) Obtain the expressions for the resultant capacitance when the three capacitors 𝐶1 , 𝐶2 and 𝐶3 are
Connected (i) in parallel and then (ii) in series.
(b) In the circuit shown in the figure, the charge on the capacitor of 4𝜇F is 16𝜇C. Calculate the energy
stored in the capacitor of 12𝜇F capacitance.

OR
(i) Derive an expression for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor filled with a medium of dielectric
constant 𝐾.
(ii) A charge 𝑞 = 2𝜇C is placed at the centre of a sphere of radius 20 cm.
What is the amount of work done in moving 4𝜇C from one point to another point on its surface?
