5.1 Adding and Subtracting Polynomials
1 Adding and Subtracting Polynomials
Learning Objectives:
1. Define monomial, polynomial and determine the degree of a polynomial.
2. Adding or subtracting polynomials.
3. Evaluate polynomials.
1. Define polynomial and determine the degree of a polynomial
Polynomial—consists of a monomial term or the sum or difference of two or more monomial terms.
Example of Polynomial:
Example of Not Polynomial:
Type of Polynomials
1. Monomial—polynomial with one term. Example:
2. Binomial— polynomial with two terms. Example:
3. Trinomial— polynomial with three terms. Example:
4. Polynomial— polynomial with four or more terms. Example:
Degree of Polynomial—is the highest degree of any nonzero term of the polynomial.
Note: 1. Degree of a nonzero constant is 0.
2. A zero polynomial has no degree.
Example 1. Determine whether the expression is a monomial (Yes or No). For those that are
monomials, state the coefficient and the degree.

Example 2. Determine whether the expression is a polynomial (Yes or No). If it is a polynomial,
write the polynomial in standard form, determine its degree, and state if it is a
monomial, binomial, or trinomial. If a polynomial has more than 3 terms, identify the
expression as polynomial.
1. 3x + 4 − 6 x 2
2. 7 x −2 + 3x
3. a 3 − 4a 4 − 3 + a
4. x 2 y 3 z
2. Adding and Subtracting Polynomial
To add or to subtract polynomial—is to add or subtract the like terms.
Like terms—are terms that contain same variable(s) raised to the same power.
Example 3. Perform the indicated operations
1. (2 y 2 + 3 y + 10) + (3 y 2 + 5 y − 22 )
2. (− 2 x 2
+ x ) − (4 x 2 + 7 x )
3. (6 y 3
− 2 y 2 − y − 11) − ( y 2 − 8 y + 9 )

⎛2 3 3⎞ ⎛4 4 1⎞
4. ⎜ x 3 − x − ⎟ − ⎜ x 3 + x + ⎟
⎝3 5 4⎠ ⎝3 3 2⎠
3. Evaluate polynomials
Example 4. Evaluate the polynomial.
1. 3x 3 − 2 x 2 − x − 1 for x = −2
2. − x 2 + 2 x − 1 for x = −3
3. 2rs + 3r − s for r = 2 and s = −1
