Operator flexView Manual
The Operator flexView user interface

1
1.1 General
The Operator flexView user interface
The flexViewRPLS program is the user interface for the Pulse Lubrication System CLU-4
installed as retrofit on RTA or RTflex. The flexView is started like a normal “Windows”
program by selecting the fV icon on the desktop of the interface PC.
It serves as an interface to access parameters, select specific functions and monitor the
cylinder lubrication. Apart from this the Alarm Monitoring System (AMS) always receives
direct alarms indications and Slow Down requests from the RPLS directly. Depending on the
AMS type installed it might be possible to visualize detailed alarm description as well. The
RPLS could be operated without the flexView, however with extended facilities for trending,
monitoring and testing not being accessible.
FlexView can be installed on any PC or laptop with Windows XP or Vista operation system.
The installation procedures are explained in the appendix of this manual.

For a connection to the RPLS

system the CAN-to-USB Adapter
and a special USB key are
required, therefore the PC or
laptop should have more than 2
USB ports, so at least 1 port CAN-to-USB Adapter USB Key
remains free.
Both CAN-to-USB Adapter and USB dongle are delivered with every RPLS installation, but
they can also be ordered via Wärtsilä service sales.

Some common recommendations for trouble-free operation of the flexView:

Do not run any additional programs absorbing resources (processor time and memory) on
this PC. It is self explanatory that games, video programs and similar applications should
never be installed / run on the flexView PC.
We strongly recommend to install an Anti-Virus program on the flexView PC and regularly
updated the virus definition files to prevent any infections of the PC system e.g. by
malware transferred via flash memory sticks etc.
NOTE: The FCM-Application for RPLS itself is absolutely safe against any threats,
viruses and malware. An infected flexView PC might become unusable but can not
transfer any kind of threats to the RPLS.
Do not use more than one flexView program online at the same time. Never connect more
than one flexView PC to the one RPLS.
Set the PC to “always on” mode, avoid going to “stand-by mode”, disable power saving
options.
Always keep the flexView running, except if e.g. any work needs to be done on the PC.

1.2 Starting up the flexView

Start the flexView by double-
clicking the icon on the desktop.

A log screen will start up and

indicate separate initialization
steps for the flexView software
and the communication build-up
with the RPLS on the engine.

1.3 Using the flexView program

The flexView window is divided in two separate cards.
The user can select different cards from the menu row on top of each card. A selection of the
same card for both upper and lower display is disabled by the software.
There are two standard cards “Indic” and “Journal”, which are shown by default when the
program is started. These two cards show all necessary data for the average daily use at sea
or during maneuvering. Detailed explanations are given in following chapters.

INDIC(-ation) displays the actual engine speed, fuel command, common rail pressures and
some general injection and exhaust valve timing data.
Journal displays engine related failures and indications with time stamps for occurrence,
acknowledging time and restoring time. For a quick reference the different indication groups
have a color code for easy separation of the groups.

Manual Operator flexView
The LUB Cards

3 The LUB Cards

The LUB card contains user parameters to adjust the Cylinder lubrication feed rate, to initiate
manual lubrication of certain Cylinders, to monitor the status of Lubricating Modules (ALM-
20) and amount of lubrication oil pulses within a selectable time range.

3.1 The LUB card

3.1.1 Feed Rate

In these fields the feed rate can be set for each Cylinder.
This is done by placing the cursor in the white field corresponding
to the federate of the desired Cylinder and setting the specific feed
rate (in relation to 100% of CMCR power). The adjustment range
is between 0.6 g/kWh and 1.6 g/kWh.

Different lubrication feed rates at different cylinder units cause a

drop down menu to appear at the bottom field “Set to all”.
This “Set to all” field allows to (re-)set different cylinder unit feed
rates to a common value.

Note: Set cursor to a character of the text “Set to all” and press
“F1” to call up a brief help menu on “Multi-Target-Scalars”.
To set all values to an equal value open the dropdown menu and
select the desired common value and then press “ENTER”

Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd. Rev.2.3.1 6/28 2009

Operator flexView Manual
The LUB Cards

The selected value is shown with a blue background.

The indicated value can now be changed by using “Shift” and

“Arrow up” or “Arrow down” keys (e.g. to 1.25 g/kWh).

Pressing combination of “Shift” and “Enter” keys simultaneously

will execute the change.

3.1.2 Manual Lubrication

In the upper field a single Cylinder number can be selected for
manual lubrication.
The number of pulses is adjustable in the lower field.

NOTE: this is not a pre-lubrication function! It is used for

testing purposes.

3.1.3 Pulse counters

The lubrication system sends pulses to solenoid valves on dosage pumps. Each pulse
triggers a pump stroke and supplies a defined quantity of lubrication oil either above, into or
below the piston rings. Number of pulses can be counted over a selectable time.

The general number of counted pulses is indicated per each

Cylinder in the “Counter” column.
A separate “Memory” counter indicates the number of pulse
counts over a selected “Timer” range.
“Memory” display is updated only after the adjusted time for
memory has elapsed and updates again only after next
passing of the adjusted time.
Example: If “Timer for Memory” is set to 1 hour, the
“Memory” remains unchanged at 0 (after a reset) until 1 hour
have passed. Then it shows the counts elapsed during this
hour. After another hour this value will be updated again.

Pulses that fail to reach sufficient peak pressure are counted

in the “Failed” pulses column.
All counters “Counter”-, “Fail-” and “Memory”-counter can be
reset to zero by changing the “Reset Counter and Memory”
field from “ready” to “reset”.

3.1.4 ALM Status and Peak Pressure Indications

The left column shows the state of ALM-20 lubrication
modules. During normal operation this field stays blank. In
other cases, the following indications are shown:

Download FCM-20 downloads software into ALM-20

Failure No communication to the ALM-20 module
??? No data available

3.1.5 Graphical indication of the current cylinder oil feed rate

The blue curve shows the relation between the Engine
power and actual cylinder oil feed rate (programmed in the
RPLS software).

The red cursor line is moving according to the actual

“Power for Lubrication” (can be read on the horizontal
axis) and points to the actual engine load and indicates
the actual feed rate on the curve and as digital value.

3.2 The EM-LUB Card (for emergency lubrication)

In the unlikely case that both crank angle encoder signals are lost, the RPLS an be operated
in the Emergency lubrication mode. In this mode, the RPLS is initiating pulses according an
optimized algorithm. To activate/deactivate it, follow the instructions on the card. Maximum
allowed engine power when Emergency Lubrication is used is 50% of CMCR.

3.3 The LUB-Par Card

At each revolution of the crankshaft the lubrication oil is injected above, into or below the
piston ring package of every cylinder unit. This card displays the share rate distribution of
lubrication pulses. This distribution ratio can only be changed by Wärtsilä service engineers.
Example: With below settings out of 100 pulses 38 are delivered to the above position of piston ring
package, 42 to the into position of the ring package and 20 to the below position of it.

4 The LUB-Adjust Card

The LUB-Adj card allows adjusting parameters for crank angle sensors offsets and estimated
power (Power from torque / shaft power meter) calculation.

4.1 Access to Adjust Parameters

Login ADJUST
For any parameter access a login menu pops up when you try to
change a value with «Shift» and «Arrow up» or «Arrow down»
keys. The password is “flexView”
After clicking ok all parameters become accessible for changes.
The Adjust level automatically switches back to normal user level
15 minutes after the last parameter change.

Note:
Entering the Adjust password accesses a higher service level, which indicates much more
detailed information in the flexView Journal for troubleshooting purposes!

2008 11/28 Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd. Rev.2.3.1

Manual Operator flexView
The LUB-Adjust Card

4.2 Crank Angle Sensor Offset

Crank Angle Offset

With engine at TDC on cylinder #1 the CA-sensors should
indicate 0.0<° in the fields Crank angle 1/2.
If required, any indicated offset can be entered in the upper
CA 1/2 Offset field, the corrected crank angle indication will
change to 0.0<°.

CAUTION:
Wrong adjustment of both offsets can cause a Cyl. Lubrication malfunction!

Note: The CA offset adjustment should be done after the mechanical alignment is finished,
with cylinder #1 at TDC. The procedure for the mechanical adjustment depends on the type
of crank angle sensor (Hengstler AC58 (Flex type) or RPLS 3600 Incremental Wheel). Refer
to the Operations & Maintenance Manual for detailed description of these procedures.

4.2.1 External shaft power versus estimated power

With the CLU4 system it is possible to have an external shaft power or torque measurement
system connected to the RPLS. These systems supply an external load signal, which is used
for accurate power determination and by such precise dosage of the used amount of cylinder
oil. To prevent under-lubrication in case of wrong external signals, RPLS verifies the external
load against its internal “Est. Power (Fuel Cmd x speed)”.
If the deviation is too large, RPLS will change over to its internal estimated power.
An initial offset between the rough RPLS power estimation and the calibrated external power
can be adjusted on the LUB-Adj card. Any possible future drift of the external signal will then
initiate a changeover to the internal power estimation curve.
CAUTION:
The power range calibration of the external source must correspond to the nominal CMCR
engine power. If the offset scaling adjustment in the LUBE-Adj page is carried out with an
improperly calibrated external power input, it can lead to dangerous under-lubrication and
consequent damage of engine components!

Adjusting the RPLS estimated power to the

properly calibrated external shaft power
signal is done as follows:
While running the engine load up, e.g. after
berth departure, the measured shaft power
will be indicated in one of the lower fields,
called “Measured” if the measured power is
within the “Visibility Range” of the particular
window.
Once the “Measured” power is close to the “Target” power (i.e. +/- 3), adjust the “Setting”,
using “Arrow-up” + “Shift” or “Arrow-down” + “Shift”, to the value shown in the “Measured”
window. Confirm your settings by pressing “Shift” + “Enter” Then continue at next load range.

Operator flexView Manual
The LUB-Adjust Card

Notes: As explained above, aim is to gain correction values at the different power ranges.
Therefore it is not mandatory to adjust at the exact “Target Power” value.
This adjustment only needs to be repeated after any changes (i.e. repairs, replacement) have
been done to the external system.

7.6 Typical flexView failure messages and indications

If this error appears when starting up

flexView, the VCI drivers have not been
properly installed.
Refer to chapter 7.2

If all indications fields show question

marks instead of values, either
the FCM module to which flexView is
connected is switched off, or
the CAN/USB adapter failed to
initialize.
If the CAN/USB adapter failed to initialize,
the CAN Led remains dark. Unplug and
re-plug the adapter on the USB port to fix
the problem.

Single indications showing question

marks appear, if other FCM modules are
switched off.

If all indications fields and menu bars

changed to a light blue colour and data is
not updated anymore, then a trend is
running in the background with maximum
possible scan time.
This is not a failure but a normal
condition: To prevent CAN bus overload
the scanning of all other fV indications is
paused, until the trend is stopped.
The “offscan” condition is indicated by the
light blue background.
