Dynamics of Engineering Systems ENG432: Tutorial 2

The document contains tutorial problems about mechanical vibrations and engineering dynamics systems. It includes problems about determining the equivalent spring constant of stepped cylinders, solving second order differential equations that model mass-spring systems, calculating natural frequencies of vibration systems, obtaining the free response of models, analyzing damped harmonic motion, and using MATLAB and Simulink to simulate and plot solutions.

Dynamics of Engineering Systems ENG432
Tutorial 2
Source: (c) Mechanical Vibration, Palm 2007

1.25 The two stepped cylinders consist of the same material and have an axial force f applied on
them. Determine the equivalent translational spring constant for this arrangement. (Hint: are the
two springs in series or in parallel?)

3.8 A certain mass‐spring system has the equation of motion 2 1800 0.  If  0 0.05 m

and  0 0.3 m/s, determine the values of A, ωn and φ in the following situation:

sin φ

3.16 A certain machine weighing 10 000 N is to be mounted on four identical springs to isolate it
from the motion of the factory floor. Determine the spring constant required to give a natural
frequency between 1 Hz and 2 Hz.

3.18 A vehicle of mass 1800 kg causes a static deflection of 0.05 m when placed on its
suspension. Determine the natural frequency of the system for vertical motion.

3.38 Obtain the free response of the following models with the initial conditions x(0)=1 and
0 1:
a 3 21 30 0
b) 5 20 20 0
c 2 8 58 0

3.41 In the vehicle suspension system m= 200 kg, k=2500 N/m, and c= 500 N∙s/m. The spring is
compressed 0.1 m when the tire hits the bump, which gives a velocity of  0 1.2 m/s.
Assuming that the tire remains out of contact with the road, (a) determine the tire displacement
x(t) and (b) compute the maximum spring compression.

3.45 Find the time constants of the model 2 26 60 0. Estimate how long it will take
for the free response to disappear.

3.64 Obtain the equation of motion for the system. The equilibrium position corresponds to
x=y=0.

3.39 A 2.3 kg object is hung from a spring whose other end is attached to a rigid support. The
object oscillates with a frequency of 250 cycles per minute in air and 240 cycles per minute when
immersed in a liquid. Determine the spring constant k, the damping ratio ζ, and the damping
constant c when the object is immersed in the liquid.

3.52 A certain mass‐spring system undergoes viscous damping. The mass is 11 kg and the spring
constant is 15 000 N/m. The amplitudes in meters of the first trough fourth cycle of free vibration
are 0.098, 0.073, 0.055 and 0.041. Compute the damping constant c.

3.73 Use MATLAB to compute and plot the solution of the following problem
5 sin 3 2 0 4
for 0 8. Compare the results with the exact solution, which can be obtain by integration.

3.82 Simulink

3.82 Use Simulink to compute and plot the solution of the following problem
5 sin 3 2 0 4
for 0 8. Compare the results with the exact solution, which can be obtain by integration.
