Assignment 1

This document summarizes questions and answers related to developing an improved forced draft biomass cook stove project. It defines key terms like forced draft and biomass, describes the types of cook stoves and how forced draft stoves work using the principle of gasification. It explains that forced draft stoves can save up to 40% of fuel wood compared to traditional stoves. The document also discusses why improving cook stove design is important to reduce health impacts and increase adoption. It notes that higher flames result in better heat transfer and efficiency. The design includes a tangential draft to provide better air swirl and combustion. The main focus in design was high efficiency at minimum weight and cost.

Questions and answers related to Project Topic

1. What does Forced Draft meant?

A draft of air for use in combustion forced through a grate or other burner by or as if by
a blower a forced draft heating unit.

2. What are Biomasses?

Biomass is plant or animal material used for energy production (electricity or heat).

3. What are types of Cook stoves?

There are two types of Cook stove available in market i.e. Direct Combustion and
Gasifiers. Combustion Cook stoves biomass is burnt without any influence of external
air supply, which results into unclear combustion with more amount of unburnt fuel or
biomass at the end of process so Gasifier Cook stoves are preferred which gives much
cleaner combustion as compared to Direct combustion cook stoves.

4. What is Forced Draft Biomass Cook Stove? On what principle these cook stoves
works?
• In the forced draft cook stoves, the biomass fuel fed into the combustion chamber is
dried, pyrolyzed and converted into a gaseous fuel through the partial combustion
process.
• Forced draft cook stoves works on the principle of gasification with cleaner combustion
as compared to fuel used like solid fuels.

5. Why to use Forced Draft Cook Stoves?

Because Combustion of gaseous fuel is highly efficient and it has the potential to save
about 40% of fuel wood when compared to traditional cook stoves.

6. Why to Improvise the Design on Cook stoves?

To reduce the impact of poisonous gases on Human beings and to adapt customer
motivation such that they would buy these cook stoves for their good.

7. Here the Flow of Air is designed by Which Law?

Bernoulli’s Law
Improvement in the Performance of Forced Draft Biomass Cook Stove

8. What is the significance of Higher Flames?

Temperatures of Gasifier and conventional stoves range from 1000oC-1100oC and 700oC-
800oC respectively. This Higher flames results into better rate of Heat transfer and cook
stoves will work at higher efficiency.

9. Why this Design does include the Tangential Draft?

Design Consist of a Draft tangentially connected with a body to give better Swirl and
Turbulence to air such that it will give better combustion.

10. What was the main focus while designing Cookstoves?

The main focus in designing was to keep the efficiency as high as possible while keeping
the weight and cost of project to minimum.
