PRIMARY 5 Online Training Session 2

The document provides 7 math word problems and explanations of their solutions. Problem 1 asks to find a 3-digit number given properties of its 2-digit components. Problem 2 asks how many rabbits there are given the total number of legs and the difference between chicken and rabbit legs. Problem 3 asks how many days it will take John and Mary to finish a project together. Problem 4 asks the minimum number of balls that must be picked to ensure at least 2 of each color. Problem 5 asks to find the sum of two digits if a 9-digit number is divisible by 44. Problem 6 asks the number of ways students can be awarded prizes for a competition. PRIMARY 5 ONLINE TRAINING

JULY 2 2020

1. Given A and B are two non-zero digits and the 2-digit numbers formed by these two digits have the
following properties:

1. AB is divisible by 8;
2. BA is a product of 3 different prime numbers;

Find the 3-digit number ABA.

Find a two – digit number that is divisible by 8:

AB = {64, 88, 72, 96, 16, 24, 32, 48, 56}
BA = {46, 88, 27, 69, 61, 42, 23, 84, 65} = product of 3 different prime numbers
46 = 2 x 23
88 = 8 x 11 = 4 x 2 x 11 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 11
27 = 3 x 9 = 3 x 3 x 3
72 = 9 x 8 = 3 x 3 x 2 x 2 x 2
42 = 2 x 21 = 2 x 3 x 7 === as you can see, 42 is a product of 3 different prime numbers
84 = 2 x 41
Therefore, A = 2 ; B = 4 ;

3 – digit number, ABA = 242

2. There are some chickens and rabbits, where the number of legs of chickens is 26 more than the
number of legs of rabbits. If there are 362 legs in total, how many rabbits are there?

Let C = number of chickens (has 2 legs)

R = number of rabbits (has 4 legs)
We have two equations: 2C + 4R = 362; 2C = 26 + 4R
Therefore, subtracting the two equations,
2C + 4R = 362
- (2C - 4R = 26)
8R = 362 – 26 = 336
R = 336 / 8 = 42 rabbits
3. John needs 36 days to finish a project. Mary needs 12 days to finish the same project. If John and
Mary do the project together, how many day(s) do they need to finish it?

John = in one day, John can finish 1/36 of the project

Mary = in one day, Mary can finish 1/12 of the project
Working together, in one day, John and Mary can finish
1/36 + 1/12 of the project.
Therefore, (1/36 + 1/12) = 1/9 of the project in one day.
They can finish the project in 9 days.

4. There are 8 blue balls, 7 red balls and 9 green balls in a bag. At least how many balls should be
picked up to ensure there are 2 balls for each colour?

9 green balls + 8 blue balls + 2 red balls = 19 balls

5. If 9-digit number 2018A905B is divisible by 44, find the value of A .

If the number is divisible by 44, then it is also divisible by 11 and 4.

Divisibility Rule of 11: The sum of the even digits is subtracted from the sum of the odd digits. The result
is either 0 or divisible by 11.

Since it says that it is divisible by 11 if the result is either 0, 11 or -11.

Thus, we will try the three results.
2-0+1-8+A-9+0-5+B = 0 ; A + B = 19  This is not possible since the only way to get a 19 is by
a 2 digit and a 1 digit number (example, 10 + 9). A and
B are 1-digit numbers.
2-0+1-8+A-9+0-5+B = 11 ; A + B = 30  Still not possible because of same reason above.
2-0+1-8+A-9+0-5+B = -11; A + B = 8  This is possible.

Therefore, the answer of A + B is 8.

6. Five students join a competition. Only top 3 students can get an award. How many different way(s)
of getting awards is / are there?

A B C D E -------
3rd PLACE : 5 students may be chosen for the 3rd place
2nd PLACE: (5 – 1) students may be chosen, 4 students
1st PLACE: 3 students
Total ways to choose students getting the awards: 5 x 4 x 3 = 60 ways

7. A stationery store had a batch of ball pens. One half and 3 more pens were sold on the first day. One
half of the remaining part and 9 more pens were sold on the second day. Finally 54 ball pens are left.
How many ball pen(s) did the stationery store have originally?

(((54 + 9) x 2) + 3) x 2 = 258 pens

8.

3^1 = 3 3^5 = 243

3^2 = 9 3^6 = 729
3^3 = 27
3^4 = 81
