Q: Describe an scavenge manifold inspection.

Scav Manifold inspection:

On a two stroke crosshead engine, monthly inspection of the scavenge manifold


should be carried out. After opening up and following enclosed entry
procedures,
a. ensuring that the doors are secured in the open position an entry can be made.
b. pockets are empty
c. take a flashlight, mirror, bucket of rags,
d. take turning gear operating control and
e. take a digital camera.

Generally note the condition of the scavenge manifold and the spaces around the
cylinder liners. Ensure that there is no build up of sludge or excessive oil deposits
and that the drains are clear.

a. Check the scavenge relief valves and temperature probes.


b. Sight auxiliary blower fan impellors.
c. Check the manifold flap valves. These should be free to move.
d. Check the scavenge ports.
e. Turn the engine so that the piston is viewable through the scavenge ports.
Inspect the piston skirt for signs of corrosion.
f. Inspect the rings condition.
g. Turn the piston down to inspect the crown(excessive deposits, burning, signs
of poor injection, or cracking.)

f. Inspect liner Look for evidence of corrosion, scuffing or abrasion.


g. When the inspection is complete, ensure all rags, along with other items are
removed from the scavenge space.

h. Box up and record inspection findings in ships PM system.
