Direct Variation

1.Example:
If y varies directly as x and given y = 9 when x = 5, find:
a) the equation connecting x and y
b) the value of y when x = 15
c) the value of x when y = 6

Solution:
a) y ∝ x i.e. y = kx where k is a constant
Substitute x = 5 and y = 9 into the equation:

y =  x

b) Substitute x = 15 into the equation

y =  = 27

c) Substitute y = 6 into the equation

2.Example:
The cost of a taxi fare (C) varies directly as the distance (D) travelled. When the
distance is 60 km, the cost is $35. Find the cost when the distance is 95 km.

Solution:
C ∝ D i.e. C = kD, where k is a constant.
Substitute C = 35 and D = 60 into the equation

35 = 60k ⇒ k =  Therefore, C =  D

Substitute D = 95 into the equation: C =  55.42


The cost for 95 km is $55.42

3. Example:
Given that y varies directly as the cube of x and that y = 21 when x = 3, calculate the
value of y when x = 8.

Solution:
y ∝ x3 that is y = kx3 where k is a constant
Substitute x = 3 and y = 21 into the equation:

21 = k(33) ⇒ k = 

So, y =  x3

When x = 8,

If y varies directly as x, and x = 12 when y = 9, what is the equation that describes this
direct variation?

Inverse Variation

1.Example:
If y varies inversely as x, and y = 6 when x =  , write an equation describing this inverse
variation.

2.Example: If y varies inversely as x, and the constant of variation is k =  , what
is y when x = 10?

k is constant. Thus, given any two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) which satisfy the inverse
variation, x1y1 = k and x2y2 = k. Consequently, x1y1 = x2y2 for any two points that satisfy the
inverse variation.

3. Example:
If y varies inversely as x, and y = 10 when x = 6, then what is y when x = 15?

x1y1 = x2y2
6(10) = 15y
60 = 15y
y = 4
Thus, when x = 6, y = 4.

4.Example:

If r varies directly as the cube of s, and r = 5 when s = 3, find r when s = 2.


5. Example:

If a varies inversely as square root of b, and a = 7 when b = 36, find a when b = 289.

Joint and Combined Variation

Example 1 – If y varies directly as x and inversely as z, and y = 24 when x = 48 and z =


4, find x when y = 44 and z = 6.
Example 2 – If f varies directly as g and inversely as the square of h, and f = 20 when
g = 50 and h = 5, find f when g = 18 and h = 6.

Example 3 – If y varies jointly as a and b and inversely as the square root of c, and y =
12 when a = 3, b = 2, and c = 64, find y when a = 5, b = 2, and c = 25.
Example 4 – The number of minutes needed to solve an exercise set of variation
problems varies directly as the number of problems and inversely as the number of
people working on the solutions. It takes 4 people 36 minutes to solve 18 problems.
How many minutes will it take 6 people to solve 42 problems.

Example 5 – The electrical resistance of a wire varies directly as its length and
inversely as the square of its diameter. A wire with a length of 200 inches and a
diameter of one-quarter of an inch has a resistance of 20 ohms. Find the electrical
resistance in a 500 inch wire with the same diameter.
