Feed Formulation

Feed formulation is the process of combining feed ingredients in proportions that meet animals' nutrient requirements. Key steps include determining nutrient needs, identifying available ingredients, and calculating amounts to supply nutrients cost effectively. Methods include trial and error, Pearson square for two ingredients, or computer programs. Precise calculations account for each ingredient's nutrient composition and total contribution to the diet. The goal is a balanced, palatable ration.

FEED

FORMULATION
FEED FORMULATION
 Feed formulation is the process of quantifying the amounts of feed
ingredients that need to be combined to form a diet that supplies all of
their nutrient requirements.

• Methods of Ration Formulation

Trial and Error Method
Pearson Square Method
Use of computer programs
RATION FORMULATION
 Is a process of combining different feed ingredients in a proportion that provides the
animals with the right amount of nutrients needed at particular stage of production
(maintenance, reproduction, egg production, lactation and/or growth).

 It requires the knowledge about the nutrients, feedstuffs and animal to be able
to develop nutritionally adequate rations, eaten in sufficient amounts, at certain
level of production, and at the most reasonable cost.

 Rations should be palatable and not cause any serious digestive disturbance or
toxic effects to the animals.
General steps in feed formulation
 Know the particular species and class of animal for which a ration is
intended.
 Determine the nutrient requirements of animals.
 Identify feeds to be used in feed formulation. Consider the availability
and unit price.
 Be acquainted with the nutrient composition of the feeds to be used.
 Decide on a suitable combination of feeds that results to a good ration.
Important considerations in feed
formulation
 Nutrient requirements
 Palatability/Acceptability
 Economical/Cost
 Digestibility
 Presence of anti-nutritional factors and toxins
TRIAL AND ERROR
 Although time consuming, consideration is given to all nutrients

THE NUTRIVE MATERIALS

A. TRIAL AND ERROR METHOD

COMPUTATION FOR TOTAL CP of Yellow corn: COMPUTATION FOR TOTAL ME of Yellow corn:
60.5 x .078 or 60.5 x 7.80/100 = 4.72 60.5 x 3350/100 = 2026.75

Note: Use the same manner of computation of the total CP and ME for other ingredients

TOTAL CP TOTAL ME

COMPUTATION FOR TOTAL CP of Yellow corn: 57.19 x .078(CP of yellow corn) = 4.46
COMPUTATION FOR TOTAL ME of Yellow corn: 57.19 x 3350/100 = 1915.87

Note: Use the same manner in computing the total CP and ME for other ingredients
PEARSON SQUARE METHOD
 Simple & easy method of determining the correct proportion of two
feed ingredients or two feed groups to obtain a desired level of protein

 However, only the protein content of the ration is given major

consideration
B. PEARSON SQUARE METHOD
3 OR MORE INGREDIENTS ARE INVOLVED
Example: The same farmer decided to formulate a fattener ration using a mixture of corn-rice bran
and fish meal
1. Separate the feeds into 2 groups, namely: energy feeds (corn and rice bran) and protein
feed (fish meal) .

2. Decide on the proportion or ratio of com and rice bran, example 2:1

3. Compute for the %CP content of the mixture

com: 7.8 x 2 = 15.6
rice bran: 12.4 x 1 = 12.4

15.6 + 12.4 = 28; 28/3 = 9.33

4. Proceed by following steps 1 to 6 of A.

FIXED PERCENTAGE OF ONE OR MORE RATION COMPONENT
FIXED PERCENTAGE OF ONE OR MORE RATION COMPONENT
COMPUTATIONS: amount x (nutrient component/100)

EXAMPLE: CORN 59.24

NUTRIENT COMPOSITION TABLE

CP = 59.24 x 7.80/100 = 4.62

ME = 59.24 x 3300/100 = 1954.92

Ca = 59.24 x 0.07/100 = 0.04

FINAL TABLE
Avail P = 59.24 x 0.06/100 = 0.036

Lys = 59.24 x 0.26/100 = 0.154

Met + Cys = 59.24 x 0.36/100 = 0.213

Note: The same manner of computation for other ingredients

ASCI 0123
THE NUTRIVE MATERIALS
Amount of corn = 100 – Soybean – RB – Coco – DCP – Limestone – Salt – Vit – Min – Dl-met)
corn = 58.83
NUTRIENT COMPOSITION TABLE FINAL TABLE

COMPUTATION:
EXAMPLE: CORN 58.83 (final amount)

CP = 58.83 x 7.80/100 = 4.59

ME = 58.83 x 3300/100 = 1941
Ca = 58.83 x 0.07/100 = 0.041
Avail P = 58.83 x 0.06/100 = 0.035
Lys = 58.83 x 0.26/100 = 0.153
Met + Cys = 58.83 x 0.36/100 = 0.212

Note: The same manner of computation for other ingredients
