Denotation and Connotation


What is the definition of denotation?
Denotation is generally defined as literal or dictionary meanings of a word in contrast to its
connotative or associated meanings. Denotation is a translation of a sign to its meaning,
precisely to its literal meaning, more or less like dictionaries.

What is the definition of Connotation?


Connotation refers to a meaning suggested or implied by the use of a particular word,
beyond it's literal meaning. Connotation impacts how readers perceive the overall meaning
of what a writer or speaker is trying to communicate.

Positive and Negative Connotations


Words may have positive or negative connotations that depend upon the social, cultural,
and personal experiences of individuals. For example, the words childish, childlike and
youthful have the same denotative, but different connotative, meanings. Childish and
childlike have a negative connotation, as they refer to immature behavior of a person.
Whereas, youthful implies that a person is lively and energetic.

Chef:
Denotation: word “chef” denote someone who prepares food.
Connotation: A "chef" has the connotation of being professional and accomplished ,

Cook:
Denotation of a word “cook” denote someone who prepares food.
A "cook" has a connotation of being someone who makes food as an amateur or for
friends and family.

Home:
Denotation: word “Home” denote a place where people live.
Connotation: A "home" also connotes warmth and love.

House:
Denotation: word “House” denote a place where people live.
Connotation: “House” lacks such a connotation and refers more to the structure of the
building than the feeling inside it.

Shrewd:
Denotation: word “Shrewd” denote intelligence.
Connotation: "Shrewd" has a connotation of selfishness and trickery.

Clever:
Denotation: word “Clever” denote intelligence.
Connotation: “Clever” in contrast, has a much more positive connotation of quick-
wittedness but without the sense of selfishness.

Skinny:
Denotation: word “Skinny” denote thinness.
Connotation: "Skinny" has a connotation of overly thin, bony, or a bit awkward.

Slim:
Denotation: word “Slim” denote intelligence.
Connotation: "Slim" has a connotation of a graceful or beautiful thinness.

Journalist:
Denotation: word “Journalist” denote someone who reports on the news.
Connotation: "Journalist" connotes a certain sense of honor and nobility in the job.

Newshound:
Denotation: word ”newshound” denote someone who reports on the news.
Connotation: word "newshound" connotes a kind of amoral, "feeding frenzy" quality to the
gathering and dissemination of the news.

Religion:
Denotation: The denotation is a brown cross.
Connotation: The connotation is a symbol of religion, according to the media connotation.
To be more specific, this is a symbol of Christianity .

Dog:
Denotation: The denotation of "dog" is just the collection of all the dogs that exist.
Connotation: The connotation of "dog" four-legged canine carnivore.

Rose:
Denotation: The denotation of a rose is that is a flower that has spines in its stem.
Connotation: The connotation of a rose could be that is something beautiful that can also
be harmful if you dare to touch it, it is passion, is beautiful danger.

Sun:
Denotation: if the sun comes out the surroundings will start to become warm.
Connotation: you are the sun in my gloomy and stormy life.

Dead:
Denotation: the game is dead easy to play i can reach the highest level without getting
lose.
Connotation: people who were dead because of covid-19 suffer from pneumonia and other
heart related illness.

Sick:
Denotation: i am very sick of the attitude of my bully classmate i should i and report him to
the teacher.
Connotation: the sick old man was given free medication by the good and generous doctor .

Milking:
Denotation: this online mobile game is milking money out of the players
Connotation: the farmer is milking the cow.

Heavy:
Denotation: this basket is full of vegetables is very heavy.
Connotation: with a heavy heart he admitted the wrong things he had done before.

Father:
The word "father" is denotative, the word "dad", although a synonym, is connotative, as it
conveys an emotional touch that the word father lacks.

Blue:
Denotation: the word “blue” is the color blue.
Connotation: its connotation is “sad” it is also a word used to describe a feeling of
sadness, as in: “She's feeling blue.

Snake:
Denotation: An animal that has a long thin creeping body with no arms and legs, limbless
scaled reptile.
Connotation: is harmful person, cheater, one who Can't be trusted, a worthless and
treacherous fellow.

Sea:
Denotation: A large body of salty water for example "Arabian sea is the part of Indian
Ocean".
Connotation: is beautiful, broad, deep, blue and mysterious. For example "Her eyes are
like a sea".

Child:
Denotation: The denotation meaning is a young person; a person between birth and
adulthood.
Connotation: the connotation meaning is kid or little one and negative connotation
meaning is brat, delinquent.

Cat:
Denotation: The denotative is: "a carnivorous mammal domesticated as a rat catcher or
pet and Connotation: Connotatively it depends, if you like cats, the word "cat" may suggest
graceful motion, affectionate, playfulness, nobel reserve and admirable self-sufficiency, if
you don't the word might suggest stealthiness, spitefulness, coldness etc.

Building:
Denotation: The denotation is a relatively permanent enclosed construction over a plot of
land.
Connotation: The connotation meaning is structure or architecture and the negative
connotation is pile or edifice.
