help eliminate sexually transmitted diseases especially among the youth.
Better To Protect Rather Than Regret: A Campaign to Raise Awareness about Sexually
Transmitted Diseases among Youth
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The fact that sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain a public health concern may
indicate that traditional methods of communicating about sexual health are not reaching every
generation. An STD is a condition that is passed from one person to another through sexual
contact. An STD can be contracted through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone
who has the STD.
Stigma, a lack of information, a lack of access to health care, and a variety of other
factors all contribute to the high prevalence of STDs among youth and young adults. People of
all ages can be affected by STDs, but adolescents and young people are disproportionately
affected. According to Sweeney from Clinic Services Manager for Falls Community Health, "A
number of factors put younger people at risk including not getting screened or having limited
access to screenings, concerns about confidentiality, thinking they are not at risk, having
multiple partners, and even social media and the Internet, which have made it easier for people
to find anonymous sex partners.”
As the old saying goes, prevention is better than cure. When it comes to youth, this is
especially true. Thus, it is really important to take an opportunity to raise awareness and
encourage people to rethink outdated stereotypes, challenge myths, and create a movement
around education and positive action.
“Better To Protect Rather Than Regret” is a program that aims to cater and educate the
youth about the importance of having a knowledge on sexually transmitted diseases. The
primary goal of this program is to reach out to young generations and give them an
understanding about this issue. The program aims to implement seminars/webinars that will
talk about the causes, types, and preventions on sexually transmitted diseases and have a
forum where youth can clarify their confusions about this matter.
Objectives
1. To help youth to understand and develop a knowledge about sexually transmitted
diseases.
2. To promote positive attitudes towards sexual intercourse to prevent sexually
transmitted diseases or reduce its risks to health.
3. To encourage the community or school to perform health-related tasks which includes
raising awareness, campaigns, and advocacies such as in STDs.
Mission
In partnership with the community and the school, the mission is to elevate awareness
on the importance of knowing sexually transmitted diseases and its effects on health among
youth. The program also envisions a healthy community and environment where youth are
being supported, guided, and protected.
Vision
We believe that proper knowledge would help youth stay safe, avoid illnesses, and
develop better self-awareness. There is plenty we can do to prepare children for life outside
world. Educating children about sexually transmitted diseases can have a positive impact not
just on their health, but also in the community. Instilling healthy discourse on this topic on
youth will reap long-term benefits.
Target Participants
Youth aged 15-18 years old, all gender, are the main target participants for this
program. They are chosen to be the target because they mostly seek pleasures on having sexual
intercourse without knowing the effects it could bring to their health. We need to give them the
support and guide they need so that they know what they can do to protect themselves.
