Now class, let us first have a short review about

our topic last meeting. So, yesterday, we
discussed the five essential parts of the plot of a
story. What is a plot again? The plot is the sequence of events in a story.

That’s right!

So, what are the 5 essential parts of a plot? Exposition

Rising Action
Climax
Falling action
Resolution

Correct!

What is an exposition again? The EXPOSITION is the beginning of the

story where the characters and the setting of
the story are presented.

Correct! How about the rising action? The RISING ACTION is the part where the
events in the story start to become
complicated with the introduction of the
conflicts.

That’s right!

What can you say about the climax? The CLIMAX is the highest point of interest
and the turning point of the story. In this part,
the readers wonder what will happen next.

Very good!

What about the falling action? The FALLING ACTION is the part where the
events and the complications begin to resolve
themselves.

Yes, that’s correct.

And finally, how will you define resolution? The RESOLUTION is the final outcome of
events in the story.

Very good!

B. Lesson Proper

This time, I will play a short video clip and I (The students will watch the video.)
want all of you to watch it attentively. After
this, I will ask you some questions.
(The Video clip will play for only two

Have you ever experienced being bullied by

someone?
What did you do? (Students’ answers may vary.)
Did you fight back?
Why were you bullied at that time?
Have you bullied someone in the past? Or are
you bullying someone at present? Why are you
doing it? Does it make you happy when you
bully someone?

So, this video clip that you’ve just watched is

related to the lesson that we are about to discuss.

2. Unlocking of Difficulties

Before finally moving on to the story, let us

first unblock the difficult words used in the

3. Discussion

So, we shall now discuss the story entitled

“Dahong Palay’’ by Arturo Belleza Rotor.
Please turn the page on 179. Let’s discover
more about the author. Arturo Belleza Rotor is:

 A professional medical doctor and a

talented writer
 He graduated from both the University
of the Conservatory of Music and the
College of Medicine.
 He received the Republic Cultural
Heritage Award in 1966 which was
given by the Philippine government

Have you really read the story? Yes, Ma’am.

That’s good because we will no longer read the

story since it is quite long. So, we will just
discuss the summary using these photos that I
have prepared. I want you to listen attentively
because from time to time, I’m going to ask you
questions.

So, I will divide you into four groups. This will

be group 1, group 2, group 3 and group 4. I will
give emoji faces for the group who can give the
correct answer to my questions. Whoever will
have the most number of emoji faces shall be
recognized as the most active group.

Are you ready? Yes, Ma’am.

Okay, let’s begin.

Dahong Palay
By Arturo Belleza Rotor

Sebio, a young man in the barrio, works in the

rice field. He had a small muscle that did not
seem fit for this kind of task like cutting fire
woods.

He is quite tall. His chest was flat, his neck was

long and his legs were thin. Despite of his “not
so impressive” physical appearance, he was
capable of doing intense work.

Sebio is always annoyed by his neighbors for

his lack of strength as he looks physically weak.
None of them would believe that he could lift
two Socony cans full of water or a sack of rice.

Comprehension Check

How did the story begin? The story begins by describing Sebio as a
young man who works in the field.
Who is Sebio? How was he described in the Sebio is the main character in the story.
story? He was described as quite tall. His chest was
flat, his neck was long and his legs were thin.
What is the place setting of the story? The setting is in a barrio or in a rural place
where most people work in fields. There were
rice fields all around the place, and carabaos,
too.
What is the problem of the main character?
Sebio is always annoyed by his neighbors for
his lack of strength because for them, he looks
physically weak.
Good Job! Let’s continue.

One evening, Sebio’s mother instructed him to

go to his Tia Binay’s house to work and give the
whetstone.

When he reached his aunt’s place, Tia Binay

couldn’t recognize him because of her failing
eyes due to her age, until one cruel joker
shouted “Sebiong Pasmado!” They called him
“Sebiong Pasmado” (Sebio the weakling)
because of his slim figure.

But then, he ignored them. He just gave the

whetstone to his Tia Binay.

After this, he found a seat in a darkest and

farthest corner, and there he took a rest. Merci,
the girl whom Sebio was attracted to approached
him and gave him suman. She comforted him by
telling him not to mind those men who were
laughing at him. Because of that, Sebio
recovered his self-esteem.

Comprehension Check

Why is Sebio became the laughing stock of the Ma’am, that is because of his physical
young people in the barrio? Were they fair to appearance. They are not fair because they
him? always discriminate or bully Sebio, which is
not good. We must be fair and kind to
everyone because we are all equal. We must
not look at the physical appearance of a
person.

If you were Sebio, how are you going to react to If I were Sebio, just like what he did Ma’am, I
those people who bully you about your physical might not be affected by those people who are
appearance and your abilities? bullying me. I will take this as a motivation
to show who I really am because I know
myself more than they do especially my
capabilities.
Nice answer! Let’s continue the story.

Pacio, the bully/braggart had challenged Sebio

to win Merci’s heart. A set of competition or
“games of strength and skill” was conducted
during their time of work. Sebio lost in the
competition. “No strength”, said the men! “No
fighting Heart”, whispered the women. Because
of this failure, he felt ashamed and wanted to
leave.

However, Merci was very understanding. She

actually approached Sebio in a very nice way as
if nothing happened.

Comprehension Check

If you are given the chance to talk to the young If I will be given a chance to talk to the young
people who bullied Sebio, what would you tell people who bullied Sebio, I would advise
them? them not to underestimate or look down at
Sebio or anyone because everyone of us has
our own abilities or skills. We all have our
strengths and weaknesses. Show respect to
other people as you respect yourself.
Nice answer!

We’re almost done in the story, so let’s

continue.
Merci asked Sebio to help her get some hay so
they could make fire to roast some corns to eat.
When they are already in the field, a poisonous
green snake called “the deadly dahong palay”
attacked Merci, but Sebio suddenly moved
himself to save her. Sebio was bitten by the
snake.

Dahong Palay is a snake that gives off

poisonous venom to the bitten victim that if not
treated immediately, it may cause death.

Sebio felt the venom of the deadly snake from

his leg up to his fast-beating heart. He could see
only blurred faces. He became too pale.
Fortunately, the loud voices of those people who
surrounded him kept him conscious.

He then asked for a knife and immediately

slashed across the two pin pricks. Dark blood
came out slowly from his bitten leg. He took
the red-hot iron and thrust it into the wound. He
treated himself in a way that showed how
unbelievably strong he is to the horrified crowd.

Sebio gained the respect of the people around

him after showing his bravery. The crowd told
him that he would never be called “Sebiong
Pasmado” again.

Comprehension Check

How did Sebio proved that he is not weak at all? Sebio proved that he is not weak at all by
showing bravery. He treated himself by
cutting his bitten leg with a knife so that the
venom of the snake would come out and this
saved him from death.

How did the people react when they saw him The people were totally shocked and couldn’t
slashing his wound? How did the story end? believe what Sebio did. Because of this, Sebio
gained the respect of the people around him.
They even told him that they will no longer
call him “Sebiong Pasmado”.
Very good!

So, let’s now identify and recognize the group

who accumulated the most number of emoji
faces and therefore they are the most active
group.

4. Generalization

So, I’m sure that like the young people in the

story who were shocked by Sebio’s action in
order to save his life, you too are surprised at
the ending of the story, am I right? Yes, Ma’am.

Okay, so let’s now sum up our discussion about

the story. Is there anyone who can summarize it
in few sentences? Ma’am, again the story tells about Sebio, the
main character, a young man who usually
becomes the laughing stock of his fellow
villagers because of his rather lanky physique,
which is different from other young men in
their place who were muscular and strong-
looking. His courage and self-confidence
always ran out before a crowd but on his own,
he possesses impressive strength that nobody
else knows.

When a poisonous snake called the deadly

Dahong Palay attacked Merci, the girl Sebio
is attracted to, he lunges himself in order to
save her and he was bitten by the snake. Sebio
took a knife and cut his wound. Then, he
grasped the red-hot iron and plunged into the
wound. This saved him from death. Because
of his bravery, from that day on, nobody
among the crowd had called him “Sebiong
Very good! Pasmado’.

5. Valuing

Now, for us to appreciate more the value of the Everyone must be respected as an individual,
story, what possible lesson/s can we derive from all people are born equal regardless of their
it so we can apply it in real-life situations? physical appearance. Let us not look at the
appearance of a person, but instead let us
value more the inner personalities or behavior
of a person.

Very well said! Remember, we are all unique,

we have different strengths and weaknesses. We
have different skills and talents.

What else can you say? The story teaches us the value of respecting
individual. Accepting others regardless of the
differences in physical appearance, abilities,
language, culture, beliefs and values can give
us a sense of belongingness and freedom.
That’s right.

6. Application

This time class, we shall have an activity

wherein you will do it by group. You are going
to arrange the events of the story using the
photos that I will give to you. What you will do
on these pictures is to simply paste on the
Manila paper in chronological order. You have
one minute to do this. Once you’re done
arranging and pasting the pictures, one member
of your group will present your output infont
and make a short explaination. Did you Yes, Ma’am!
understand?

Okay, let’s start. (The students will do the activity as instructed

by the teacher.)

(Next activity....)

Class, you’re all very good because you were

able to arrange the pictures correctly based on
the choronological order of the events of the
story. Give yourselves a round of applause!

This time, we shall proceed to the next activity.

You will now dentify correctly the exposition,
rising action, climax, falling action, and the
resolution of the story. Again, I’m going to give
each group one piece of Manila paper where
you will paste the five essential parts of the plot
of the story. Once you’re done, proceed infront
with your output. Are you ready? Yes, Ma’am.

(The students will accomplish the said

activity

(After 3-5 minutes.....) Sample output:

Okay, let’s check your answers class. EXPOSITION - Sebio is a young man in a
barrio, who works in the rice fields and is
being teased by his neighbors for his physical
appearance and lack of vigor.

RISING ACTION - Sebio lost in the

competition or games of strength and skills
against Pacio to win Merci’s heart and he felt
ashamed because the lady was watching him.

CLIMAX - Sebio was bitten by a snake

called the Dahong palay when he forwarded
himself in order to save Merci.

FALLING ACTION -Sebio took a knife and

slashed across the two pin pricks and dark
blood came out slowly from his bitten leg.
Then, he took the red-hot iron and thrust it
into the wound.

RESOLUTION -Sebio gained the respect of

the people around him after showing his
bravery. The crowd told him that he would
never be called “Sebiong Pasmado” again.

Once again, give yourselves a big hand for your

output in this activity. Congratulations because
you all got the corrects answers. That means,
you really undertood the lesson well.

Do you have any questions or clarifications? None, Ma’am.

If none, then let’s proceed to the evaluation part
of our lesson today.

IV. EVALUATION

Make a short reaction paper with three to four paragraphs based on the following questions:

1. If you were Sebio, how are you going to react to people’s negative reactions about your
physical appearance and your abilities?
2. Do you think that how Sebio reacted in paragraph 88 is the right thing to do? Why?
