Batch Reactor Example

This document provides information about a chemical reaction carried out in a batch reactor at two temperatures. It gives concentration data over time and asks to determine the reaction order, rate constants, and activation energy. The solution shows: 1) The reaction is first order based on the linearity of the logarithmic concentration plots. 2) The rate constants k1 and k2 are determined from the slopes of the linear plots as 0.015 min-1 and 0.0196 min-1 for temperatures of 351K and 371K respectively. 3) Using an Arrhenius plot of the rate constants versus inverse temperature, the activation energy is calculated to be 3.4 kcal.

Example:

The following reaction is carried out in a batch reactor by measuring the total number of
moles of NH3 produced versus time.

GN + 3N2H4 → TAGN + 3NH3 ↑

Initial concentrations of GN and N2H4 are 0.5 moles/L and 2.575 moles/L, respectively. The
reactor volume is 200 ml and it can be assumed that the volume of the reaction mixture
remains constant at this value.

T = 351K
Time (min) 0 5 10 30 50 60 80 100
NH3 (mmol) 0 30 55 130 174 190 216 234

T = 371K
Time (min) 0 5 10 30 50 60 80 100
NH3 (mmol) 0 38 69 116 177 213 237 264

a) Find the reaction order and the value of rate constant at both temperatures.

b) Find the activation energy.

Note: Please be careful that the initial concentration of N2H4 is higher than the initial
concentration of GN.

Solution:

CA0 = 0.5 moles/L

CB0 = 2.575 moles/L

CB0 >> CA0 (A is limiting reactant)

A + 3B → C + 3D
