Grade 10 EIM Learning Activity Sheets

This document contains 5 learning activity sheets for an electrical wiring course. Sheet 1 defines wires, cables, stranded wires and solid wires. Sheet 2 defines types of electrical wires and cables. Sheet 3 discusses factors that affect electrical wire choice and how wire size relates to current capacity. Sheet 4 provides practice converting between wire gauge (AWG) and diameter in millimeters. Sheet 5 asks students to determine current capacity for different wire types using code tables.

Competency: Install Electrical Lighting Systems, Auxiliary Outlets and Lighting Fixtures
Learning Target/Objective: Explain the difference- cables and wires, stranded wires and solid wires.
Activity Title: Explaining the difference- cables and wires, stranded wires and solid wires.
Materials: LAS, LMS
Concept Notes

Wires are those conductors 3.26mm or No.8AWG and smaller in sizes. Cables on the other hand,
are those which are larger than the wires. So, wires are small cable while cables are big wires.
Wires and cables are either:

Stranded wire- contains a group of wires twisted to form a metallic string.

Solid wire- consists only of single conductor.

Questions:

Explain the following question/statement.

1. What is the difference between cables and wires?

2. Differentiate stranded wires from solid wires.

Activity Title: Enumerating the factors that affect choice of electrical wiring.
Explaining the size of wires in relation to its current carrying capacity.

Materials: LAS, LMS

Concept Notes

Some factors that will affect your choice of electrical wiring include color, label information and applications.
The information printed on the wire covering is all that you need to choose the correct wire for your home. Here’s
one of detailed information on the various features of electrical wire, which will help you choose the correct
composition.

1. Size of Wires- Each application requires a certain wire size for installation, and the right size for a specific
application is determined by the wire gauge. Sizing of wire is done by the American Wire Gauge System.
Common wire sizes are 10, 12, 14- a higher number means a smaller wire size, and affects the amount of
power it can carry. For example, a low- voltage lamp cord with 10 amps will require 18- gauge wire, while
service panels or subpanels with 100 Amps will require 2- gauge wire.

Questions:

1. What are the factors that affect the choice of electrical wiring?

2. Explain why 8 AWG can carry a higher amount of power than 14 AWG.

Learning Target/Objective: Determine equivalent wire size in mm to AWG.
Activity Title: Determining equivalent wire size in mm to AWG.
Materials: LAS, LMS
Concept Notes:
Much of what you need to know for electrical repairs and remodeling involves wiring- how
to identify it, how to buy it, and how to install it with proper connections. The proper wire size is
critical to any electrical wire installation.

Questions:

Write on the space provide the equivalent wire size in AWG of the following.

1. 1.160 mm - ________ 4. 0.360 mm - __________ 7. 2.052 mm- _______ 10. 4.115 mm- _______
2. 0.812 mm - ________ 5. 1.829 mm- __________ 8. 1.150 mm- _______
3. 0.527 mm - ________ 6. 1.450 mm- ___________ 9. 1.024 mm- _______

Using the NEC/PEC Charts

The Philippine Electrical Code (PEC) is used throughout the industry to determine the conductor size for most
applications. It is imperative that an electrician be familiar with code tables and correction factors. PEC Article3.10
deals with conductors for general wiring. Table 3.10.1.16 is generally used to select a wire size according to the
requirements of the circuit- carrying ability) of not more than three single insulated conductors in raceway or cable or
buried in the earth based on ambient (surrounding)air temperature of 30 ⁰C.

Questions:

Determine the current carrying capacity (ampacity) of the following conductors. Write your answer on the space
provided.

1. RH (copper) 12AWG- _______ 3. FEPB (aluminum)8 AWG- ______ 5. V( copper) 14AWG- __________
2. XHHN (aluminum) 4 SWG- __________ 4. ZW( copper) 2 AWG - __________
