CHAPTER 3 : Multiplication

Various methods of multiplication

 Regrouping method (row & column)

Step 1 Separate (ungroup) the numbers in correspond to its place value

Step 2 Multiply the number separated

Step 3 Add the result

Example:

a) 123 x 45
Step 1:
123 = 100 + 20 +3
45= 40 + 5

Step 2:
X 100 20 3 +
40 4 000 800 120 4920
5 500 100 15 615
+ 4500 900 135 5535

Step 3:
4920 + 615 OR 4500 + 900 + 135
= 5535
 Column Method

Step 1 Multiply the ones place column

Step 2 Multiply the tens place column


Multiply the hundreds place column
Step 3 Notes: If there is more column to multiply, keep on multiplying till
all done
Step 4 Add the product

Example 1:

Multiply 542 x 2

5 2 4
Step 1 Multiply the ones place column X 9
3 6
5 2 4
X 9
Step 2 Multiply the tens place column
3 6
1 8
5 2 4
Multiply the hundreds place X 9
Step 3 column 3 6
1 8
4 5
5 2 4
X 9
3 6
Step 4 Add the product 1 8
+ 4 5
4 7 1 6

OR using simple method: +1 +1
