Experiment No. 1 Saponification Value Determination Equipments / Materials

This document describes an experiment to determine the saponification value of olive oil. The experiment involves weighing olive oil, adding alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution and heating. The excess potassium hydroxide is then titrated with hydrochloric acid using phenolphthalein indicator. A blank determination is also performed. Students are required to record their results, perform calculations using the provided formula, and answer questions about the procedure.

EXPERIMENT NO. 1
SAPONIFICATION VALUE DETERMINATION

EQUIPMENTS / MATERIALS
Acid buret
Double clamp
Iron stand
Erlenmeyer flask
Hot plate
Casserole
Glass tubing (70 to 80 cm in length)

CHEMICALS

Olive oil
0.5 N alcoholic potassium hydroxide
0.5 N hydrochloric acid VS
Phenolphthalein TS

PREPARATION OF ALCOHOLIC KOH MIXTURE

1. Dissolve 2.10 grams of KOH in 2mL of distilled H2O

2. Add alcohol to obtain 60mL solution
3. Store in amber colored storage bottle and label properly.

PROCEDURE

1. Weigh 1.50 grams of olive oil in a previously fared 500-mL Erlenmeyer flask with
a cork stopper
2. Add 25-mL of 0.5N alcoholic potassium hydroxide.
3. Insert into the neck of the flask by means of a perforated cork an air condenser of
glass tubing
4. Heat the flask on a water bath for 30 minutes frequently rotating the contents
5. Add 1mL of phenolphthalein and titrate the excess potassium hydroxide with 0.5N
hydrochloric acid until the pink color disappears
6. Perform a blank determination at the same time following the same procedure
without the sample.

QUESTIONS:

1. Define the term saponification value.

2. Why should a blank determination be run parallel with the determination of the
saponification value of the sample?

3. Should the alcoholic 0.5N KOH used in saponification value determination be of

an exact known normality? Explain.

4. Discuss the reason of adding alcoholic 0.5N KOH to the sample.
