Math G4 Q2 M7 W4 11pages

This mathematics document discusses changing between improper fractions and mixed numbers, and changing fractions to their lowest terms. It provides examples of changing 9/4 to the mixed number 2 1/4, and changing the mixed number 2 1/4 to the improper fraction 9/4. Students are given practice problems to change various fractions between improper and mixed form. They are then introduced to changing fractions to their lowest terms.

LOOKING BACK
Let us recall how to identify proper fraction, improper fraction and
mixed number.
Proper fraction is a fraction whose numerator is less than the
denominator. It is a fraction greater than 0 but less than 1.
Improper fraction is a fraction whose numerator is equal to or greater
than the denominator. It is a fraction equal to 1 or greater than 1.
Mixed number is a combination of a whole number and a proper
fraction.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF THE LESSON

9
Claire will serve 4 slice of cake to their visitors. How many
whole and fractional part of cake does she have?

To change improper fraction to mixed form:

9
How are we going to express 4 in mixed form?
By drawing regions:
9
Let us illustrate 4.

Our denominator is 4, so we divide each whole into four. Our numerator

is 9, so we shade 9 parts.
1
Notice that there are 2 wholes shaded entirely and another 4 shaded.
9 1
We can say that 4 is the same as 2 4 .

To change improper fraction to mixed number and vice versa:
1. To change an improper fraction to mixed number, divide the
numerator by the denominator and express the remainder as the
numerator of the fraction while copying the denominator.
2. To change a mixed number as an improper fraction, multiply the
denominator by the whole number, then add the numerator to the

LOOKING BACK

Let us recall how to identify prime and composite numbers and

finding the greatest common factor.
Prime number is a number with only two factors: one and itself.
Composite number is a number with more than two factors.
We find the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of 2 numbers by listing
method, prime factorization and continuous division.

MATHEMATICS SLEM GRADE 4 SECOND QUARTER

BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF THE LESSON

Every morning Mother spends 2 hours in cleaning the house.

What fraction of the day is used in cleaning the house? Express your
answer in lowest term.
How will you solve the problem?
Division by the GCF
Express 2 hours as fractional part of 24 hours.
2
In fraction, it is written as 24
2
To change 24 to its lowest term, do the following:

1. Find the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of 2 and 24. List down all
factors of 2 and 24.
2 = 1, 2
24 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24
The GCF is 2
2. Then divide the numerator and the denominator by the GCF.
2 2 2 1
= 24 ÷ = 12
24 2
𝟏
That means, Mother spends 𝟏𝟐 of the day cleaning the house.

Cancellation of common prime factors

a. Get the prime factors of both the numerator and
the denominator
2 1x2
=
24 1x2x2x2x3
b. Cancel common factors
2 1x2
= 1x2x2x2x3
24
3. Multiply the remaining factors
2 1x2 1
= 1 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 12
24

𝟐 𝟏
Therefore, the simplest form of 𝟐𝟒 is 𝟏𝟐

7
MATHEMATICS SLEM GRADE 4 SECOND QUARTER

How can we say that a fraction is in its lowest term?

A fraction is in its lowest term if:
1. The numerator and denominator are both prime numbers.
2 7
(ex. 5 , 13,)
2. The numerator and the denominator have no common factor
except 1.
3 9
(ex. 8 , 14)

Another example
15
Find the lowest term of .
25

Division by the GCF

a. List down the factors of 15 and 25 then get the GCF.
15 = 1, 3, 5, 15
25 = 1, 5, 25
b. Divide the numerator and the denominator by the GCF
15 15 5 3
= ÷ =
25 25 5 5

Cancellation of common prime factors

1. Get the prime factors of both the numerator and

the denominator

15 1x 3 x 5
= 1x5x5
25

2. Cancel common factors

15 1x 3 x 5
=
25 1x5x5

3. Multiply the remaining factors

15 1x 3 x 5 3
= =
25 1x5x5 5

𝟏𝟓 𝟑
Hence, the lowest term of is
𝟐𝟓 𝟓

8
MATHEMATICS SLEM GRADE 4 SECOND QUARTER

Another example

20
Find the lowest term of .
36

Division by the GCF

a. List down the factors of 20 and 36 then get the GCF.

20 = 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20
36 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 18, 36

b. Divide the numerator and the denominator by the GCF

20 20 4 5
= ÷ =
36 36 4 9
20 5
Hence, the lowest term of 36 is 9

Cancellation of common prime factors

1. Get the prime factors of both the numerator and
the denominator
20 1x 2 x 2 x 5
= 1x2x2x3x3
36
2. Cancel common factors
20 1x 2 x 2 x 5
= 1x2x2x3x3
36
3. Multiply the remaining factors
20 1x 2 x 2 x 5 5
= =
36 1x2x2x3x3 9
𝟐𝟎 𝟓
Hence, the lowest term of is
𝟑𝟔 𝟗

ACTIVITY
