Welcome!
The unit of competency, “Install and Configure Computer System”,
is one of the competencies of COMPUTER SYSTEMS SERVICING NC II, a
course which comprises the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a
TVET trainer to possess.
The module, Installing and Configuring Computer System, contains
training materials and activities related to assembling computer hardware,
preparing installer, installing operating system and drivers for
peripherals/devices, and installing application software as well as
conducting test and documentation.
In this module, you are required to go through a series of learning
activities in order to complete each learning outcome. In each learning
outcome are Information Sheets, Self-Checks, Task Sheets and Job Sheets.
Follow and perform the activities on your own. If you have questions, do not
hesitate to ask for assistance from your facilitator.
Remember to:
Read information sheets and complete the self-checks. Suggested
references are included to supplement the materials provided in this
module.
Perform the Task Sheets and Job Sheets until you are confident that
your outputs conform to the Performance Criteria Checklist that
follows the sheet.
Submit outputs of the Task Sheets and Job Sheets to your facilitator
for evaluation and recording in the Accomplishment Chart. Outputs
shall serve as your portfolio during the Institutional Competency
Evaluation. When you feel confident that you have had sufficient
practice, ask your trainer to evaluate you. The results of your
assessment will be recorded in your Progress Chart and
Accomplishment Chart.
You must pass the Institutional Competency Evaluation for this
competency before moving to another competency. A Certificate of
Achievement will be awarded to you after passing the evaluation.
You need to complete this module before you can perform the module
on “LO2: Setup Computer Networks”.

Learning Objectives
After reading this information sheet, the trainee must be able to
appreciate the configuration of the parts of computer system within 1.5
hours.
Introduction
This information sheet covers the knowledge, skills, and attitudes
required to assemble a computer system.
In this lesson, the trainee will be discussed with the parts of computer
system, its interconnectivity configuration, Occupational Health and Safety
(OHS), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), different tools used for
computer assembly, types of ports and cables, procedure for assembling
computer system, and BIOS configuration procedure.
In the current world, it’s almost impossible to imagine that someone
can live without computers. They have become an electronic device of almost
every day use for individuals of every age, and essential in almost all the
business dealings that are made nowadays.
Since most of households in today’s time have computers, it is just
timely to study on how to configure these devices. Just the need arises, you
need not to call and pay for a service technician.

1. Supercomputers
These are arguably the
most powerful in terms of speed
and accuracy. They are types of
computers used in solving
complex mathematical
computations. They are capable of
executing trillions of instructions
per second, which is calculated in
floating point operations per
second (FLOPS).
NASA Supercomputer
2. Mainframe Computers
Mainframe computers are large sized
computer types. They are equally powerful but
fall short in terms of the computation ability in
supercomputers. They are like big file servers,
enabling multiple users from nearby and remote
locations to access resources at the same time.
Also known as big iron, these systems can
handle massive amounts of data going in and
out simultaneously. This makes them popular
with businesses.

Minicomputers are general purpose devices
without the monumental expenses associated with a
larger system. Their processing power is below that
of mainframe systems but above the capabilities of
personal computers.
The first minicomputer was unveiled in 1967
by Digital Equipment Corporation and was followed
later by designs from IBM and other companies.
Minicomputers were intended for a number of
activities listed below:
Prototyp 1990, MicroVAX II
Switchboard control. Clone Minicomputer
4. Servers
These are types of computers used to provide
resources, services, and functionality to client computers
in a server-client network model. Resources provided are
based on the functions of a particular server, which may
fall into these categories – File Server, Database Server,
Print Server, FTP Servers, Application Server, and Web
Server.

Safety Reminders: Before you start disassembling a system unit, ensure that your unit and
yourself are safe. Always remember on these “doesn’t fit doesn’t belong”.
The following are OHS in Computer Systems Servicing:
Read and follow instruction on the manual carefully.
Do not work alone so that there’s someone who can take care of you
in case of accident or emergency.
Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working.
Always power off and unplug the computer before working on it.
Always ground or discharge yourself before touching any part of the
computer (such as the computer casing) and make sure your hands
are completely dry to avoid damaging any mechanical parts as well as
to avoid electrocution.
Be sure you’re standing in a dry place and use only rubber shoes
when standing on the ground or in a concrete floor.
Take off any metal objects on your arms or fingers such as bracelets,
rings or watches. Even if your unit is unplugged, there may still be
some remaining electric charge.
Be careful with the tools that may cause short circuit (such as screw
drivers)
Take away any liquid such as mineral water or soft drinks near your
working area or near computers, the three of the most damaging
things to a computer are moisture (sweat, drinking water), shock
(electric or from being dropped) and dust (any debris from household
dust to bits of food).
Handle all parts with care. Place each piece you remove carefully
down onto a stable surface, if a component does not come out easily,
do not use excessive force if things don’t quite slip into place or when
you’re removing it. Instead, check if you are removing it correctly and
no wires still connected in the hardware.
Hold the components by edges and do not touch the IC’s.

Safety Reminders: Always use appropriate PPE when working. Use the right tool/equipment
for a job to avoid accident/injuries and damaging computer parts.
Safety Reminders: To avoid damaging screws, use the right screw driver when loosing or
tightening it. Do not tight it too much to avoid damaging the thread.
