After reading this information sheet, the trainee must be able to
appreciate the configuration of the parts of computer system within 1.5
hours.

Introduction
This information sheet covers the knowledge, skills, and attitudes
required to assemble a computer system.
In this lesson, the trainee will be discussed with the parts of computer
system, its interconnectivity configuration, Occupational Health and Safety
(OHS), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), different tools used for
computer assembly, types of ports and cables, procedure for assembling
computer system, and BIOS configuration procedure.
In the current world, it’s almost impossible to imagine that someone
can live without computers. They have become an electronic device of almost
every day use for individuals of every age, and essential in almost all the
business dealings that are made nowadays.
Since most of households in today’s time have computers, it is just
timely to study on how to configure these devices. Just the need arises, you
need not to call and pay for a service technician.

Types of Computer

The different types of computers can be grouped into six major

categories according to size. Each category excels at specific functions.
 Supercomputers
 Mainframes
 Mini-computers
 Servers
 Personal computers
 Embedded systems

Generally, sizes of computers determine the processing abilities.

Larger computers have higher processing speeds while smaller ones offer the
better experience for personal computing.

1. Supercomputers
These are arguably the
most powerful in terms of speed
and accuracy. They are types of
computers used in solving
complex mathematical
computations. They are capable of
executing trillions of instructions
per second, which is calculated in
floating point operations per
second (FLOPS).

Some of the applications of supercomputer:

 Test new aircraft, tanks, and a host of weaponry and camouflage.
 Stabilize the game performance when thousands of gamers around the
world play online games like World of Warcraft.
 Simulate and test the effects of nuclear weapon detonation.
 Simulate weather behavior and predict earthquakes.

2. Mainframe Computers
Mainframe computers are large sized
computer types. They are equally powerful but
fall short in terms of the computation ability in
supercomputers. They are like big file servers,
enabling multiple users from nearby and remote
locations to access resources at the same time.
Also known as big iron, these systems can
handle massive amounts of data going in and
out simultaneously. This makes them popular
with businesses.

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is a multidisciplinary field

concerned with the safety, health, and welfare of people at work.

The goals of occupational safety and health programs include to foster

a safe and healthy work environment. OSH may also protect co-workers,
family members, employers, customers, and many others who might be
affected by the workplace environment.

Safety Reminders: Before you start disassembling a system unit, ensure that your unit and
yourself are safe. Always remember on these “doesn’t fit doesn’t belong”.
The following are OHS in Computer Systems Servicing:
 Read and follow instruction on the manual carefully.
 Do not work alone so that there’s someone who can take care of you
in case of accident or emergency.
 Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working.
 Always power off and unplug the computer before working on it.
 Always ground or discharge yourself before touching any part of the
computer (such as the computer casing) and make sure your hands
are completely dry to avoid damaging any mechanical parts as well as
to avoid electrocution.
 Be sure you’re standing in a dry place and use only rubber shoes
when standing on the ground or in a concrete floor.
 Take off any metal objects on your arms or fingers such as bracelets,
rings or watches. Even if your unit is unplugged, there may still be
some remaining electric charge.
 Be careful with the tools that may cause short circuit (such as screw
drivers)
 Take away any liquid such as mineral water or soft drinks near your
working area or near computers, the three of the most damaging
things to a computer are moisture (sweat, drinking water), shock
(electric or from being dropped) and dust (any debris from household
dust to bits of food).
 Handle all parts with care. Place each piece you remove carefully
down onto a stable surface, if a component does not come out easily,
do not use excessive force if things don’t quite slip into place or when
you’re removing it. Instead, check if you are removing it correctly and
no wires still connected in the hardware.
 Hold the components by edges and do not touch the IC’s.

Ports and Cables

The motherboard/mainboard interconnects all the computer parts

since it contains the central processing unit (CPU) which processes all data
and requests from various components. It is fixed in a casing where its
single side called back panel connector or I/O ports protrudes at the back of
the casing in a way that external components could be freely connected.
Each component usually contains two cables – i.e. power and data
cable that varies in port type at its end.

To successfully assemble the components of computer, you must be

familiar with the cables and port usually designed to every device. Observe
the following images.

Safety Reminders: When cables and pins do not slip in a slot or port, do not use excessive
force to avoid damaging the parts. Check the compatibility of cable and port. Remember,
“doesn’t fit, doesn’t belong”.

BIOS Configuration Procedure

The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is a special firmware stored in

a chip on your computer's motherboard. It is the first program that runs
every time you turn on your computer.
The BIOS performs the POST, which initializes and tests your
computer's hardware. Then it locates and runs your boot loader, or loads
your operating system directly. It also provides a simple interface for
configuring your computer's hardware. When you start your computer, you
may see a message like "Press F2 for setup." This setup is your BIOS
configuration interface.
The following procedure describes how to set the most important
BIOS parameters to "safe" settings. NOTE: The focus here is on maximizing
the likelihood of the system to function properly. You will want to use this
procedure when setting up a new system or when having problems with the
PC. Again, not all of the various BIOS settings will be discussed here.
Safety Reminders: Be careful in configuring the BIOS, it may cause your computer to
misbehave. Once it happens, go back to the BIOS interface and choose “Restore Defaults”
to restore everything to manufacture’s (safe) settings.

Procedure/Steps:
1. Prepare the needed materials, PPE, and equipment.
2. Observe safety measures.
3. Perform the activity properly.
4. Ask the facilitator if in doubt.
5. Read instructions carefully.
6. You are given 30 minutes to do the procedures.
7. Read the motherboard manual to determine the assigned keyboard
key in entering the BIOS Setup Utility or check the screen while the
system is performing the Power-On Self-Test (POST).
8. Configure the BIOS.
9. Enter the BIOS Setup Utility by pressing F2 or Del or any assigned
keyboard key while the system is performing the POST.
