Questions to Ponder

Read the questions and instructions carefully. Write your answers in the space provided.

1. Provided the traditional/conventional concept of literacy, how literate are you?

The conventional concept of literacy is divided into three sub-categories; the
basic literacy, comprehension literacy, and the functional or practical literacy. I can say
that I am good in these three categories because I can recognize letters and words, I
can read and understand them, and I can tell the meaning of a word depending on the
sentence.

2. As a pre-service teacher, what kind of written materials should you be able to read and
understand? Are you reading these materials?
As a pre-service teacher, I should be able to read and understand a module or
instructional material, lesson plan, notebooks, reports, and other documents or writings.
Yes, I am reading these materials.

3. Which of the new literacies are you knowledgeable in? Which of the new literacies do
you lack knowledge in?
I am knowledgeable in vlogging, video making, and text messaging. On the other
hand, I lack knowledge in podcasting, digital storytelling, and social networking. These
new literacies arose from the increasing availability of communication technologies.

4. Although reading education in the Philippines aims to develop Functional/Practical

literacy in learners, what level of literacy is being developed when classroom practices
focus more on memorization rather than on understanding and application?
Because they provide information to clarify, support, or explain the main idea,
supporting details are developed in the classroom. These details demonstrate the truth
of the main idea. As a result, memorization is prioritized over understanding and
application.

5. Differentiate the traditional concept of literacy to the modern view of literacy.

The traditional concept of literacy means the ability to read, write and
understand. In this era, there are no advance technologies. On the other hand, the
modern literacy is viewed as the skills and bodies of knowledge necessary for survival.
The presence of technology in this time give the ability to communicate and create
digitally.

7. Describe the changes in the 21st century that have led to the rise of new literacies.
The availability of communication technologies that were once unavailable to the
people is the cause of the changes in the 21st century that led to the rise of new
literacies. Increased reach, now people can communicate to each other even they are
apart. Increased means of communication, nowadays, it is easier and faster to
communicate to other people compare than the Victorian era where they use flowers as
a means of communications.
