CSE30312 Transportation and Highway Engineering Assignment 2

This document discusses different types of at-grade junctions and provides examples of a signal junction and elevated roundabout in Hong Kong. It describes the key characteristics of uncontrolled/priority intersections, at-grade roundabouts, and signal junctions. For a signal junction in Mongkok, it gives the location, a site photo, and details about the intersection legs and road type. Similarly, it provides the location, a photo and road details for an elevated roundabout in Hong Kong.

Q1
When a local road meets a highway at the same height, or grade, it is referred to as an
at-grade junction. This necessitates cars stopping on one lane when the other has the
right of way. There are three types of at-grade junctions: Uncontrolled/Priority
Intersections, at-grade Roundabout and signal Junction. Each junction has its own
design characteristic.
a. The design characteristics and the differences between Uncontrolled/Priority
Intersections and the other two junctions:
Uncontrolled intersections are intersections with no signs or traffic lights. Minor roads
have "yield" or "stop" control at priority intersections. Uncontrolled intersections are
typically used when lower grade roads intersect at a T-intersection, where no control
is in place and normal yield rules apply. Compared to the other two types of junctions,
the uncontrolled junction is faster and has almost no waiting time. However, there are
some disadvantages: 1. uncontrolled junction is prone to cause traffic accidents.
Visibility is especially important in this type of junction.2. Vehicles must slow down
or stop while traveling along the primary road in order to enter the secondary road.
This can easily cause two vehicles to collide when vehicles on the primary road are
too late to slow down or stop.

b. The design characteristics and the differences between Space-sharing

intersections / at grade roundabout and the other two junctions:
A roundabout consists of a circular lane and a central island. This setup allows traffic
coming from either direction to enter the traffic circle and rotate in a single direction
with the center circle of the traffic circle until it turns to the desired direction of travel
and leaves. The junction is considered to be a form of channelized intersection. Its
main design purpose is to ease the traffic flow by allowing cars to move clockwise in
one direction around the center island. The main advantages of this junction are: 1.
cheaper construction cost; 2. less waiting time due to signals compared to signal
junction. At the same time, the At-grade Roundabout also has some disadvantages: 1.
when there is a large number of vehicles passing through the intersection, traffic
safety hazards can arise due to the lane changing behavior of vehicles exiting the
intersection in the inner ring. 2. the traffic flow is not easy to control.

c. The design characteristics and the differences between Time-sharing

intersections / Signal Junction and the other two junctions:
The junction uses traffic signals to assign priority. The junction has four advantages
over other types of at-grade intersections: 1. less stringent requirements for driver
visibility. 2. easier for pedestrians to cross. 3. space saving. 4. signal junction uses
signals to indicate a clearer way to pass than at-grade roundabouts, allowing safe
control of traffic flow. There are also some disadvantages: 1. slower diversion than a
roundabout; 2. the need to install traffic signals.
Q2
For one at-grade junction in Hong Kong:
1) the key characteristics of the Signal Junction:
The intersection is signalized at the junction of Shanghai Street and Soy Street. The
intersection has a relatively constant traffic pattern to meet the traffic demands of the
area. The area is located in a busy commercial center with a large number of
pedestrians, and the use of signal junction can coordinate between pedestrians and
vehicles to reduce the number of accidents.

2) The Signal Junction is located at the intersection of Shanghai Street and Soy
Street in Mongkok. This is the location map on the map:

3) This is the site photo of the signal junction:

4) The detailed characteristics of the signal junction:
i) The name of the leg: Shanghai Street, Mongkok Soy Street.
ii) Road classification: Urban Trunk
iii) Road Type: Single Carriageway
iv) Number of lanes in each direction: 2
For one grade separated junction in Hong Kong:
1) The key characteristics of Elevated Roundabout:
The Grade-separated Intersections have six intersections, with W Kowloon Hwy street
crossing the Elevated Roundabout. traffic is released primarily by the movement of
the major and minor roadways through the roundabout.

2) The Elevated Roundabout is located on Lin Cheung Rd and Hoi Fai Rd. This is
the location map on the map:

3) This is the site photo of the Elevated Roundabout:

4) The detailed characteristics of the Elevated Roundabout:

ii) Road classification: Urban Road
iii) Road Type: Single Carriageway
iv) Number of lanes in each direction: 2
