What I Need to Know

You wish to express your thoughts in the class discussion. You need to get a
clarification on a confusing lesson. You like to buy something in the store. Have you
been into these situations? Did you achieve understanding? If the answer to these
questions is “yes”, then you were able to communicate.

Transmitting the sender’s intended meaning is the essence of effective


communication. This module explains the “process” of communication.

As a learner of this module, you are expected to:

a. identify the parts of communication process; and,


b. apply knowledge of communication process to various tasks.

Note: This module focuses on the process of communication as part of the


original MELC, which is Explains the functions, nature and process of
communication in order to come up with eight modules. (Ref.: Regional
Memorandum No. 056, s. 2022)

What Is It

Communication process pertains to the “exchange of information (a


message) between two or more people” (Nordquist, 2020).

We communicate to survive. Even


babies communicate. Through their coos and
cries, we know that they can be happy,
hungry, sleepy, scared, or just uncomfortable.
As a result, the parent or guardian may be
compelled to leave the tasks at hand and
attend to the baby’s need.

In oral communication, the process of communication is further identified as a


two-way process made up of six parts: sender, receiver, message, communication
channel, decoding and feedback (Point Park University, 2021).
