Communication is a

language of peace.
Functions, Nature and
Process of
Communication
Communication is a two-way
process of connecting to both living
and non living things.
It is also a means of sharing and
exchanging messages, information,
ideas, and feelings for mutual
understanding (Gregoriom, J.C.,
2015).

9
The word communication has
been derived from the Latin
word ‘communis’, meaning to
share.
10
Let us further define communication using
the two key terms “message” and “understand”.

1. Communication is a message understood.

First, there should be a clear message.
Second, the message must be understood by the
receiver for whom it is meant.

2. Communication is social interaction through

messages.
“Communication is a sharing of experience.” In our
society, we all interact with messages. Without
interactions, a society cannot survive. Social
interaction is always through messages.
11
Nature of Communication
❑ Communication is a process.
❑ Communication occurs between two or more
people (the speaker and the receiver)
❑ Communication can be expressed through written
or spoken words, actions (nonverbal), or both
spoken words and nonverbal actions at the same
time.
Process of
Communication
In a given context, the sender
converts his or her thoughts
into signals as words (usually
using the mouth).

ENCODING PROCESS 15
The sender sends the
signals (speaks) through a
channel (such as air).

16
As the signals are sent
through the channel,
there is some noise
(anything that reduces
the quality of the
signals such as when
words cannot be heard
clearly.) 17
The receiver hears the
signals using the ears.

18
The receiver converts
the signals into
thoughts.

DECODING PROCESS 19
The receiver sends
feedback by
becoming the sender.
