Sheet 5

This document contains a worksheet on digital modulation techniques including BPSK, QPSK, OQPSK, and M-PSK. It includes questions about signal space diagrams, probability of error calculations, waveform generation, bandwidth, bit rate, symbol rate, and BER comparisons between different modulation schemes. It also contains questions about generating I and Q streams for QPSK and OQPSK modulation and calculating symbol error rates for QPSK with gray coding.

Sheet #5
BPSK & QPSK & OQPSK & MPSK
1. A PSK signal is applied to a correlator supplied with a phase reference that lies within 𝜙
radians of the exact carrier phase. Determine the effect of the phase error 𝜙 on the average
probability of error of the system.

2. The signal components of a coherent PSK system is defined by:

𝑠(𝑡) = 𝐴𝑐 𝑘𝑠𝑖𝑛(2𝜋𝑓𝑐 𝑡) ± 𝐴𝑐 √1 − 𝑘 2 cos(2𝜋𝑓𝑐 𝑡)
Where 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 𝑇𝑏 and the plus sign corresponding to symbol 1 and the minus sign to
symbol 0. The first term representing the carrier component included for the purposes of
synchronizing the receiver to transmitter.
(a) Draw the signal space diagram for this scheme, what observations can you make
about this diagram?
(b) Show that in the presence of AWGN of zero mean and power spectral density No/2,
the average probability of error is:

1 𝐸𝑏
𝑃𝑒 = 𝑒𝑟𝑓𝑐 (√ (1 − 𝑘 2 ))
2 𝑁0

1
Where: 𝐸𝑏 = 2 𝐴2𝑐 𝑇𝑏

(c) Suppose that 10 percent of the transmitted signal power is allocated to the carrier
component. Determine the 𝐸𝑏 /𝑁0 required to realize a probability of error
equal 10−4 .
(d) Compare this value of 𝐸𝑏 /𝑁0 with that required for a conventional PSK system with
the same 𝑃𝑒 .

3. a) Given the input binary sequence '1100100010', sketch the waveforms of the in-phase and
quadrature components of a modulated wave obtained by using the QPSK based on the
following encoding rules:
DiBit Carrier Phase
10 π/4
00 3π/4
01 5π/4
11 7π/4

b) Sketch the QPSK waveform itself for the input binary sequence specified in part (a).

Sheet #5
BPSK & QPSK & OQPSK & MPSK
4. A QPSK system transmits data at the rate of 2.5 × 106 bits per second. During the course
of transmission, white Gaussian noise of zero mean and power spectral density 10-20 W/Hz
is added to the signal. In the absence of noise, the amplitude of the received sinusoidal wave
for any of the four possible messages is 1 µV. Determine the average probability of symbol
error and the average probability of bit error for this system.

5. Compare between a BPSK system and a QPSK system in terms of (Bandwidth, Bit Rate
and Symbol Rate, BER, and Signal Amplitude) under the following conditions:
a. Both systems have the same Eb and bit rate.
b. Both systems have the same Eb and symbol rate.
c. Both systems have the same symbol energy and bit rate.

6. Draw the I-stream and Q-stream for the following sequence: 100111100011
a. QPSK is used
b. OQPSK is used

7. Drive an expression for the probability of symbol error for QPSK if grey coding is used
and each of the symbols '00' and '11' occurs with probability 1/3.Assume symbols '01' and
'10' are equiprobable. Then, draw the block diagram at the receiver.

8. Consider two systems QPSK and 8-PSK, find the required increase in energy per bit for 8-
PSK to have the same SER as QPSK.
