Homework 4 Question

This document contains a homework assignment for an Introduction to Biomedical Engineering course. It includes 4 questions assessing understanding of light and optics concepts. Question 1 (20 points) asks students to draw a Venn diagram of additive and subtractive colors and define color temperature, and explain the principle of liquid crystal displays. Question 2 (25 points) requires describing natural light properties, listing electric light sources, and stating Snell's law formula. Question 3 (35 points) involves calculating light intensities after passing through polarizing filters and finding the depth of a rectangular pool, as well as determining angles of refraction and light speed. Question 4 (20 points) asks students to define fiber optics, describe its anatomy, and

INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY

INTRODUCTION TO BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING – 2023

HOMEWORK 4
Due Date: 24, 25th October, 2023
Student ID:………………………………. Student Name:………………………
Note: Your homework must be written by hand, hand it in the Intro’s box on the 4th floor.
Use online literature research if necessary.
Notes: Box all numeric answers calculated. Forgetting to box will lead to 5 minus points for the
whole score
Score:
Question 1 Question 2 Question 3 Question 4 Total

Question 1 (20pts):
1) Draw the Venn diagram which shows the model of addictive colors and subtractive
colors. What is color temperature? (5pts)
2) Indicate the principle of Liquid Crystal Display with illustrating picture? (10pts)
3) What are refraction and reflection? What is critical angle? (5pts)
Question 2 (25pts):
1) Describe the natural properties of light. (10pts)
2) List some electric light sources and briefly describe each of them (10pts)
3) What is Snell’s law formula? Indicate each value. (5pts)

Question 3 (35pts):
1) Unpolarized light of intensity 21.2 W/cm2 is incident on two polarizing filters. The axis
of the first filter is at an angle of 24.6 degrees counterclockwise from the vertical (viewed
in the direction the light is traveling) and the axis of the second filter is at 62.2 degrees
counterclockwise from the vertical. What is the intensity of the light after it has passed
through the second polarizer? (5pts)

2) A rectangular pool with a flat horizontal bottom is filled with water. A student looking at
the midpoint of the water surface at an angle of 45° with the vertical is barely able to see
a point lying on the intersection of the pool wall and the bottom of the pool. Calculate the
depth of the pool. Given that the refractive index of water is n = 4/3, the two walls of the
pool are 30cm apart. (10pts)
3) If a ray of light passes from medium A to medium B under an angle of incidence of 9°,
then the angle of refraction is 8°.

a) Find the angle of refraction when the angle of incidence is 60° (10pts)
b) Calculate the speed of light in medium A given that the speed of light in medium B is
200000 km/s (10pts)

Question 4 (20pts):
1. What is fiber optic? What is the anatomy of fiber optic? (10pts)
2. What is total internal reflection? What are the conditions for index of refraction of the 2
media and incident angle to make the total internal reflection happen? (10pts)
