ECON503 - Lecture Notes

Rationality and preferences can be modeled using utility functions and preference relations. A preference relation is a binary relation that models whether one alternative is weakly or strongly preferred to another. If x is assumed to be at least as good as y, then its utility u(x) is greater than or equal to u(y). While rationality does not require real-valued utility representations, it does assume preferences are complete, transitive, and have the property of strong monotonicity. Lexicographic preferences provide an example of a preference relation that is rational but not represented by a real-valued utility function.
